Science Week 2

Part A

In this assignment (lesson) you will perform the tasks required during the lesson. At the end of the lesson there is a part IV which you have to answer some questions.  Submit your answers to those questions in the link below. For your convenience I have re-posted the questions below.

Instructions part I

This activity is designed to help you experience the true nature of science, which it is built on evidence that can be observed or deduced from the natural world. However, this evidence can sometimes be confusing, seemingly conflicting, and apparently random. Furthermore, each new bit of evidence often creates more questions than it answers. The activity illustrates that scientific explanations are only tentative explanations, because new discoveries may show that previous hypothesis were incorrect.                  On the next page you will see a set of 5 checks written by fictional character(s). Observe the information on the checks.  Look at the amount on the checks, what they are written for, the signatures, the information on the memo line. Look at the entire document and try to formulate a tentative hypothesis that explains the storyline represented by the checks. This is your original hypothesis.

Check Set 1 (Observation)

Hint to write a hypothesis:

Answer the question:

what plausible, logical story accounts for the evidence presented in the checks?

1. Share your final hypothesis on the discussion forum titled: "Sharing hypotheses".

2. Answer the questions below and submit here.

What bits of information on the checks were valuable to you in formulating a hypothesis?

·     What information was useless?

·     List any misleading information that was presented.

·     Why do we say that a hypothesis in science is "tentative?

·     Can your hypothesis become a theory? Explain.

·     Is your final hypothesis "correct"? Explain.

Part B

Instructions part II

Once you are done with your original hypothesis, you can move on to the next page where there will be 5 more checks. Use this new information to formulate a second tentative hypothesis that explains the storyline. Incorporate the new information into your previous storyline logically. Record this on your worksheet.
