NU403 Evidence for Nursing Practice
Week 1 Discussion
DQ1 Ethical Principles
Group A: Beneficence and Respect for Human Dignity
Group B: Justice and Informed Consent
Use the designated group discussion board to work with your group and brainstorm your response (minimum 1–2 paragraphs) to the questions below. Once you have decided on your final answers, elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” and post the group’s answers to the discussion board on behalf of the entire team.
Define the ethical principle assigned to your group, what it includes, and how you might have seen it applied in the clinical setting. The discussion should be based on the information from the readings and other assignments.
Provide an example, drawn from your practice experience, of the ethical principle assigned to your group.
Read the other group's definitions and examples, and engage them in the discussion thread titled "All Participants."
Please refer to the Discussion Board Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.
The described expectations meet the passing level of 80%. Students are directed to review the Discussion Grading Rubric for criteria which exceed expectations.
DQ2 Research Paradigms
Group A: Positivist (Quantitative) Research Paradigm
Group B: Constructivist (Qualitative) Research Paradigm
In this assignment, each group will argue the merits of one of the two main types of research. Group A will take the Positivist (Quantitative) side and Group B will take the Constructivist (Qualitative) side.
Work with your group and use the designated discussion board to develop a bulleted list of points that support why your group’s paradigm is superior to the other paradigm. The points made should be based on information from the readings and other assignments. Elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” and post the group’s final list of bullet points to the discussion board on behalf of the entire team.
After your group posts, each individual member of the group is responsible for reading and responding to the points made by the other group. Select a few key points to refute. Participate actively in the debate as it unfolds.
Please refer to the Discussion Board Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.

DQ1 Evaluating the Structure of Research Articles
Using the Guidelines for Critical Analysis of a Research Report (PDF), review assigned study articles and answer the following questions regarding the specific research problems mentioned in each. Use a bulleted format list for your responses as a group, and feel free to link to related research as needed to help justify your answers to each of the questions below.
Articles Assigned:
Group A: Beck, C. & Watson, S. (2010). Subsequent Childbirth After a Previous Traumatic Birth. Nursing Research, 59, 241-249. doi: 10.1097/NNR.0b013e3181e501fd (Note: Click OvidSP & Athens then Article as PDF to access this article.)
Group B: Howell, Carol C., Rice, Marti H., Carmon, M., & Hauber-Pickett, R., (2007). The relationships among anxiety, anger, and blood pressure in children. Applied Nursing Research, Volume 20, Issue 1, Pages 17-23. ISSN 0897-1897. doi: 10.1016/j.apnr.2005.10.006
Guiding Questions for Assigned Articles:
What is the problem being studied?
Is the researcher(s) clear about what is being studied?
Is the problem clearly identifiable? Is it researchable?
Is the problem significant to nursing practice? To theory development?
What is the theoretical framework for a quantitative study. if any?
What is the philosophical underpinning for a qualitative study, if any?
Working as a team, provide thoughtful responses to the questions above. (Use the designated discussion board to communicate with your team members.) When you have decided on your final answers, elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” who will post the answer set to the discussion board on behalf of the entire team.
As a group, post your initial answers by the end of Day 4 and provide one additional comment to another groups posting. Be sure to respond to all comments on your thread by no later than Day 7 of this week.
Please refer to the Discussion Board Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.
The described expectations meet the passing level of 80%. Students are directed to review the Discussion Grading Rubric for criteria which exceed expectations.
DQ2 Choosing Your Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Paper Topic (Individual Discussion)
Complete your individual response by the end of Day 4. In addition to your original response, you will need to post at least two replies to other classmate posts in the Group Discussion as well as respond to all posts on your original response before the end of Day 7.
After reading your assigned research article and thinking about areas of nursing research that you'd like to explore further, create a discussion thread that lists your potential topic and whether or not you'd like to approach the topic from a qualitative or quantitative perspective. The purpose of this discussion board is to not lock you into a specific area of research, but rather to allow your classmates to serve as brainstorming partners in developing your topic further. At the conclusion of the week, you will need to submit your proposed research topic to your instructor for final approval.
Please refer to the Discussion Board Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.

Week 3 Discussion
Quantitative Article Analysis
First, read this article:
McMillian, Small & Haley (2011). Improving Hospice Outcomes through Systematic Assessment—A clinical trial. (PDF) Cancer Nursing, 34(2), 89-97.
Begin by reading the abstract and use the questions as guide.
Working as a team, answer the following questions in 1-2 sentences. (Use the designated discussion board to communicate with your team members.) When you have decided on your final answers, elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” who will submit the answer set on behalf of the entire team.
How relevant is the research problem to the actual practice of nursing?
Is the research quantitative or qualitative?
What is the purpose of the research?
What do you think about possible clinical implications for nurses, MDs and other team members, to the patients and their families?
Why do you think quality of life (QoL) over time in both of the groups is being studied?

Qualitative Critique
First, read this article:
Johannsen, M., O'Connor, M., O'Toole, M. S., Jensen, A.B. Hojris, I., & Zachariae, R. (2016). Efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on Late Post-Treatment Pain in Women Treated for primary Breast Cancer: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Begin by reading the abstract and use the questions as guide.
Working as a team, answer the following questions in 1–2 sentences making sure you include your rationale. Use bullet points. (Use the designated discussion board to communicate with your team members.) When you have decided on your final answers, elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” who will submit the answer set on behalf of the entire team.
Please read and answer each of the questions that are listed in the critique guidelines provided here: Critique Guidelines (PDF).
I have provided some pointers to help you with the questions and how to find the answers within the article.
Begin your review by reading the abstract. It will give you a brief overview of each of the sections.
Read the entire article using the questions as your guide. You will see how the paper is organized in the same order as the questions. The details for the questions are located within the body of the paper. The organization and the headers used within the study will also help inform you as you read.
When you get to the analysis section, you will find that the analysis is explained in the discussion section. The limitations are defined by the authors, and the implications for nursing (think of the three domains: nursing education, nursing research and nursing practice).
Note: These three domains cannot be separated as they each continually inform the other. (Think of a three-legged stool; if one leg is removed, the stool falls.)

Mixed-methods Analysis
First, read this article:
Van Bogaert, P. Peremans, L., Van Heusden, Verspuy, M. Kureckova, V., Van de Cruys & Franck, E. (2017). Predictors of burnout, work engagement and nurse reported job outcomes and quality of care: A mixed method study (PDF). BMC Nursing, 16(5).
Begin by reading the abstract and use the questions as guide.
Working as a team, answer the following questions. (Use the designated discussion board to communicate with your team members.) When you have decided on your final answers, elect one member of your team to be the “responder,” who will submit the answer set on behalf of the entire team.
Note: You are not expected to analyze the detail of this study.
Answer the following questions:
Do you think it is important to get direct feedback from the nurses and the managers? Why or why not?
Can you see the value of putting both the Qual and the Quant studies together?
Did this study provide a better understanding of the predictors of burnout (aka Compassion fatigue)?
Do you think this research is significant to:
nursing education?
nursing research? nursing practice?

First, read this article:
Chang, Y., Hayter, M. & Wu, S. (2010). A systematic review and meta-ethnography of the qualitative literature: Experiences of the Menarche (PDF). Journal of Clinical Nursing, 19. 447-460.
Why is the systematic review referred to as cornerstone of evidence-based practice?
How many research studies did these authors review?
What type of studies did the authors review? What were they interested in finding out?
How does one research report have such importance in understanding a person’s experience of a phenomenon (in this case, the onset of menarche)?
What were the key findings?
