**This document primarily addresses my expectations for your formal essays, though not citing sources when and where they are appropriate in informal writing can be a problem, as well.
- Literary analysis is always written in the present tense—be careful that your verb tenses are consistent and remain in the present tense.
- If you are simply writing about one work and are not using information from other sources, you should include page numbers from the work in the text of your paper.
- If you use quotations, either from the text itself or from outside sources, be sure to cite those sources and/or page numbers in the text of your paper. Also, include a Works Cited page.
- Use MLA format. See the Purdue OWL link in Course Documents if you have any questions about it.
- If you use any information from other sources, you must cite those sources in your text and include a Works Cited page. This is the most common error that I see in student papers. Unfortunately, not giving credit to the sources you use is considered to be plagiarizing—refer to your Syllabus for full information.
- When writing about literature, your own insights and perspectives are the most important. All written work should, for the most part, consist of your own thoughts and ideas.
- As in any academic paper, the grades you receive, on formal assignments in particular, are impacted by your errors. Check your grammar, spelling, etc. and read the paper aloud to yourself before submitting it to me.
