Art is not limited to drawing, painting, and sculpture. While these are certainly popular types of media, artists have been experimenting and evolving the types of media they use to create their artwork for centuries. Marcel Duchamp even made the toilet an important staple in his artwork! Artists such as Pablo Picasso have created important pieces of work in numerous media types including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and printmaking. That constant evolution allowed him to stay current and even revolutionary for a lengthy period of his life.
The media options within these categories are expansive as well. For example, there are numerous types of materials that can be used to paint ranging from watercolor, to acrylics, to oils. Even substances such as coffee has been utilized to paint! Having this understanding and being able to identify different types of media used to create art will allow us to advance our knowledge and further appreciate artwork.
Instructions: Use the Venn Diagrams below to identify and compare/contrast the different types of media that could beused to create art. Each circle represents one specific media type. List qualities that are unique to that media type in these circles. Common elements of the media types are represented by the areas where the circles overlap in the middle. Media types to choose from include painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and printmaking. Using the information you have listed within the Diagrams, write a 2-3 paragraph summary for each comparison set (Venn Diagram) which further explains and analyzes the similarities and differences between each media typeanalyzed.
