Unit 2 Assignment
Introduction:
Taylor Madison was recently elected to a position as county supervisor in Blackacre County. As part of his campaign, he assured the voters of Blackacre County that he would “remove the scourge of dangerous dogs from our safe community.” This campaign pledge was a response to an incident last year where a dog escaped an enclosure and seriously injured a little boy who had been throwing rocks at the dog. Though the breed of dog was undetermined, Mr. Madison found that villainizing pit bulls seemed to be popular with voters. Now that he has been elected, he found the other county supervisors are also in favor of banning dangerous breeds of dogs from Blackacre County, especially pit bulls.
Instructions:
Mr. Madison has asked you to do some research on other jurisdictions that have banned specific breeds of dogs. He wants to know if their efforts have been successful and how those bans have been received by those communities. He would also like you to find at least two examples of a model code that he can use as an example for his own breed specific legislation in Blackacre County. Be sure to consult primary legal authority for the model code examples, but secondary legal authority is acceptable for general research on breed specific legislation.

Unit 4 Assignment
Instructions:
Client interviews are an important part of a legal practice. Interviewing clients may be part of your daily activities in a busy law office, so it is important to understand the interviewing process. One of the best ways to learn about interviewing clients is by interviewing someone who regularly interviews clients in order to discover his or her experiences. For this assignment:
Select an individual working in the legal field to interview and contact such individual to schedule a day and time for the interview, which should be conducted in person or by phone.
Draft at least 10 substantive questions to ask your interviewee (see required criteria below). Perform some research on exploratory techniques used in the legal profession to help you draft your questions. Be sure to cite the sources that you used to research your questions.
Conduct the interview.
Take substantive notes of your interviewee’s responses to each of the questions you ask to create transcripts of the interview.
Write a 2-page reflective summary of the interview, describing the key information you learned from the interview regarding your interviewee’s experiences with client interviews and the exploratory techniques used in the legal profession.
Required Criteria:
In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the Assignment, a successful paper must also meet the following criteria:
Length of your project should be 3–4 pages (double-spaced, 12-point font), excluding cover page and references page. You should have 1–2 pages of transcripts (notes from the interview), listing the 10 questions asked and summaries of your interviewee’s responses to each question and a 2-page reflective summary.
Your 10 interview questions must be substantive and designed to engage your interviewee and encourage him or her to provide plenty of information regarding client interviews and the exploratory techniques used in the legal profession.
Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained.
Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).
Writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful.
Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics.
Appropriate citation style should be followed.
Suggestions:
Do not wait until last minute to schedule the interview. Schedule it as soon as possible and make sure to build in time for possible rescheduling.
Interview someone who has plenty of experience interviewing clients.
You should try to find someone in your local legal community to interview so that the interview can help you build some potential employment contacts.
Really think about the questions you are going to ask and use the interview as an opportunity to learn more about the legal field.

Unit 6 Assignment
Instructions
Republic Magazine states that “[t]here is nothing novel about the principle and practice of jury nullification, which dictates that citizen juries have the right and authority to rule both on the facts of a case, and the validity of a given law.” However, jury nullification remains a controversial topic in American jurisprudence.
For this Assignment, download and read the "Jury_Nullification.pdf" file from Course Resources, Course Documents. Perform some additional research on the topic of jury nullification. Then, create a voice-over PowerPoint presentation between 7 to 8 slides that explains jury nullification and include examples of when it has been used. Present the arguments for and against jury nullification, and then present your conclusion as to whether juries should be instructed that nullification is appropriate in some cases. The presentation should be persuasive and include speaker notes and embedded audio recordings explaining the content presented on each slide.
PowerPoint Format:
Include appropriate title slide(s) for each section of your presentation.
Use the slide notes section in the presentation to include information that follows your narration, being sure to follow the conventions of Standard English.
Slide content should include brief points that identify the areas that will be addressed in the narration. Do not add too much content to each slide; the slides should only provide the highlights of what is being discussed in your narration.
At least 3 in-text citations from either the course text or other scholarly sources should be included with brief points that were researched. The narration should fully explain the points.
Cite all sources on a separate reference slide at the end of the PowerPoint and reference each source in the body of the presentation using 6th edition APA formatting and citation style.
Identify the source of any pictures you use, being sure to cite them correctly using 6th edition APA style in-text citations.
Narration Guidelines:
Maintain a professional tone by summarizing observations and evaluations for each slide.
Ensure that your presentation is highly ordered, logical, and unified.
The oral presentation should also include a highly developed and sustained viewpoint and purpose.
Words should be clearly enunciated and professional tone should be sustained throughout the presentation narration.
Superior oral delivery techniques, including word choice and oral expressiveness, display exceptional content, organization, and style, while leading the audience to a dynamic and supported conclusion.
Audio recording should be free of background noise and interruptions.

Unit 9 Assignment
Introduction:
Jendall Kenner came into our office today to ask for representation on a recent burglary charge. Jendall says that last month, a friend called him sometime in the afternoon and invited him to a party that night at 128 Oakland Street. He knows now that he mistakenly wrote the address as 182 Oakland Street. He admits that he was already really drunk when he caught a city bus to the party.
When he arrived at 182 Oakland Street around 6:00 p.m., he wasn’t surprised that the party had not yet begun. It was still early. He didn’t see anyone at the house and the door was unlocked, so he went inside to wait for other people to show up. While he waited, he helped himself to a few more beers from the refrigerator, and he turned on the stereo to help “get the party started.” He suspects he then must have passed out, because he woke up on the kitchen floor with a police officer standing over him with a gun pointed at him. The arrest report says that the police arrived at 8:43 p.m. after the homeowners arrived home and called to report an intruder.
Jendall explains that he feels really bad about the whole incident, but he isn’t a criminal. It was all just a big mistake that he doesn’t want to ruin his life. He has asked that we represent him to try to get the burglary charge dropped.
Jendall has been charged under the burglary statute located at Code of Virginia § 18.2-92.
Instructions:
Draft a legal memorandum to your supervising attorney regarding this client’s matter. Research the burglary statute indicated above and any case law related to this issue that you find helpful. Be sure to cite your sources. Accurately identify the elements of burglary contained in the statute. Compare the facts above with the elements of burglary to see if the client has been charged correctly. Make a recommendation as to whether we should accept this client’s case and what result we should expect if we take this case to trial.
Required Criteria:
In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the Assignment, a successful paper must also meet the following criteria:
Length should be 1-2 pages, excluding cover page and references page.
Double-spaced and in a 12-point font
Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained
