LS100 Introduction to the Law and Legal Profession

Unit 2 Assignment

Your Degree Plan and Academic Journey

In the Unit 2 Assignment, you will review your Degree Plan and reflect upon the required and elective courses. Your Degree Plan is an academic map to working toward your degree goal throughout your study at the University. You can use this assignment in discussing your future courses with your education advisor.

As you may have noticed, your degree plan has both required courses and courses that you get to choose, called electives. You may have some or all of your electives fulfilled by transfer credits. The point of this assignment exercise is to get you actively involved in your reviewing all of your courses based on your career plans.

Download and Review Sample Degree Plan

In Course Documents, there are sample degree plans provided for your program. Go to Course Documents and click on the “Degree Plan” category. You should see a list of documents:

Associates of Science in Legal Support and Services

Bachelors of Science in Legal Support and Services (Includes the Paralegal Concentration)

Bachelors of Science in Environmental Policy and Management

Legal Secretary Certificate

Pathway to Paralegal Postbaccalaureate Certificate

Download and review the degree plan for your respective program.

Note: If you are enrolled in a program that is not within the School of Legal Studies, please complete this assignment using your specific degree plan. For more information please reach out to your education advisor.

After downloading and reviewing the degree plan for your program, please look at the Open Electives and consider those courses you would like to take while completing your degree. Note your selections on the degree plan document.

For help in choosing electives, go to the course catalog and read the descriptions for all the elective courses that seem of interest to you. These course descriptions should help you to further understand the skills and knowledge that will be featured in the courses available.

Note: Reference the online University Catalog to help complete this assignment.

The University certifies that the information contained in the Catalog related to degree plans is current and correct, but is subject to change without notice. If changes are made to the information in this Catalog, a revised version will be provided.

Reflection on Your Degree Plan: Required and Elective Courses

After reviewing the required and elective courses in your degree plan, please engage in some reflection and address the following questions:

What skills and knowledge do you expect to learn from your required and elective courses? You do not need to discuss all of the courses listed but rather select 3–5 required and elective courses of particular interest to you.

How will these individual skills and knowledge help you in your field?

How will your required and elective courses further your career goals in general?

If you had Open Electives to select in your degree plan, why did you select some of those electives?

Note: Students in the Legal Secretary Certificate program do not have any electives. Other students may find that all electives are fulfilled by transfer credit. If so, please focus your discussion solely on the other questions.

Please respond to the questions using the degree plan template provided.

Answer each question in paragraph form. Your responses should be double-spaced, using 12 pt. font and Standard American English. 1–2 pages of content is required. Your answers will be based on your thoughts and will not require outside citations. In addition, your Assignment should demonstrate careful proofreading.

Keep in mind that college students are expected to have strong writing skills, and you should put forth your best writing effort for this Assignment. You may not be at a point where you have strong writing skills, but you will have every opportunity to develop them as you continue through your program of study. Be sure to use the resources available to you through the Writing Center for help on this or any other assignment in your studies. In addition to live tutoring, the Writing Center has ongoing student workshops, a Writing Reference Library, and more.
