CM206 Interpersonal Communications
Unit 8 Seminar
Attending live Seminars is highly recommended, as it is important to your academic success. The Seminar allows you to review the important concepts presented in each unit, discuss work issues in your lives that pertain to these concepts, ask your instructor questions, and chat in real time with your fellow classmates. In this course, there are graded Seminars in Units 1 through 9. You must either attend and participate in the live Seminar or complete the Seminar alternative assignment in order to earn points for this part of the class.
The Seminar for Unit 8 discusses how improving communication competence and creating listenable messages can enhance the listening process.
Please come to Seminar prepared to discuss the following:
How can you improve listening during each stage of the listening process?
What are the key differences between hearing, listening, and active listening? When might each be applied?
How might context influence how we listen? For example, how might we need to listen to friends vs how might we need to listen at work?
In what ways can we create messages that are more listenable for our audience?
What strategies can we employ when providing feedback, both to ourselves and to others, which can help to improve our communication and listening skills?
To earn Seminar credit for this unit, complete one of the following options below:
Option 1- Attend Seminar:
You are strongly encouraged to fulfill your Seminar requirement through this option if possible. Many students find the synchronous discussion very helpful because the instructor will clarify the unit information and your classmates may pose questions that you also have about the material.
Option 2- Alternative Assignment:
If you are unable to participate in the live Seminar, submit an essay answering the Seminar questions listed above. Before answering the questions, review the Seminar recording for information missed. Seminar Option 2 postings need to be in Microsoft Word and incorporate the text material. Your response to the Seminar questions should be composed in complete sentences and paragraphs and be at least 350 words in length. Be sure to answer all questions and include references to earn your Seminar points. Please refer to the Seminar rubric for grading details and contact your instructor if you have questions about anything covered in the Seminar.
The Option 2 Assignment should be completed and submitted to the Unit 8 Seminar Dropbox before the unit deadline (Tuesday night).
