Unit 1 Quiz

Question 1

Read each passage and decide whether the writer's aim is to entertain, inform, educate, or persuade. After you choose your answer, select FEEDBACK for more information on the author's purpose.

Beginning March 14, 2014, Mapleleaf Inc., will no longer be able to provide employees with free dental coverage. We can provide you with a list of various insurance options that are available for purchase. We appreciate your continued support of our company endeavors as we transition through these challenging economic times.

What is the writer's purpose?

Question options:

a) entertain

b) inform

c) educate

d) persuade

Question 2 Do not support Governor White in his upcoming bid for reelection. In the past year, he has reduced the state's education budget, causing the loss of thousands of teacher jobs and the potential reduction of teacher salaries. In addition to the loss of jobs, his policies have created problems in our classrooms. We are losing support personnel and our class sizes have been increased from a maximum of 22 to 26, making it even more challenging for us as teachers to provide our students with the individual instruction they need. While White says he supports education, it is clear he does not and if he is reelected, we may find our classroom sizes growing even larger, our paychecks cut, and even our jobs taken away from us.

What is this author's purpose?

Question options:

a) entertain

b) inform

c) educate

d) persuade

Question 3 Take a look at the following example of writing that attempts to educate an audience on how to bake cookies:

Version 1:

1. After procurement actions, de-containerize inputs. Perform measurement tasks on a case-by-case basis. In a mixing type bowl, impact heavily on brown sugar, granulated sugar, softened butter, and shortening. Coordinate the interface of eggs and vanilla, avoiding an overrun scenario to the best of your skills and abilities.

2. At this point in time, leverage flour, baking soda, and salt into a bowl and aggregate. Equalize with prior mixture and develop intense and continuous liaison among inputs until well-coordinated. Associate key chocolate and nut subsystems and execute stirring operations.

3. Within this time frame, take action to prepare the heating environment for throughput by manually setting the baking unit (by hand) to a temperature of 375 degrees =F8F (190 degrees C). Drop mixture, in an ongoing fashion, from a teaspoon-type instrument onto an ungreased cookie sheet at intervals sufficient enough apart to permit total and permanent separation of throughputs to the maximum extent practicable under operating conditions.

4. Position cookie sheet in bake situation and survey for 8 to 10 minutes or until cooking action terminates. Initiate coordination of outputs within the cooling rack function. Containerize, wrap in red tape, and disseminate to authorized staff personnel in a timely and expeditious basis.

Contrast the previous directions to Version 2:

1. PREHEAT your oven to 375° F.

2. COMBINE 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in small bowl. Beat 1/2 cup of butter, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a large bowl until creamy. Add 2 eggs, one at a time, and make sure you beat well after added each egg. Gradually stir in your flour mixture and then add 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Make sure you allow 2 inches of space between each cookie.

3. BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes and then place the cookies on wire racks to cool completely.

Now, answer the following questions:

Which version is more effective, given the audience and purpose of writing a recipe?

Why is this version more effective?

Which version will you choose?

Which recipe is easier to follow?

version 2

Because it is easier to follow directions .

I would choose Version 2

Version 2 is easier to follow.

Question 4 Read this paragraph from Karen Starr's article published by the Global Conference on Business and Finance Proceedings. The title of this article is “The Game Changers: Exploring Radically Transformational Challenges Confronting Education Business Leadership” http://eds.b.ebscohost.com.lib.kaplan.edu/eds/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=81c9cdbf-b73b-46b6-927d-d6b780152e49%40sessionmgr110&vid=3&hid=115

A reinvigorated and fortified laissez-faire free market economic and neo-liberal policy hegemony is rapidly changing the operations and behaviors of educational programs and institutions. Education’s role in national economic fortunes has assumed primacy over its individual, civic, or social benefits (Reid, Gill & Sears, 2010; Smyth & Shacklock, 2004). Education is a contested and highly political realm of social life. Reforms are “deeply political”, and raise questions about the fundamental purposes of education (Woods, 2008, p. 80). Globalization has had a profound effect, forcing education institutions to rethink their operations and behaviors as the world becomes smarter, faster, and smaller (Bush, 2008). In the face of globalization, education is as fallible and vulnerable, yet as propitiously and opportunely placed to benefit as any other essential human enterprise. Through the forces of globalization, education everywhere confronts new challenges and uncertainties (Held & McGrew, 2004), although there are opportunities: decisions about what to do, how, and when rest with educational leaders. In order to achieve positive outcomes, there are “wicked” determinations to be made at the local level (Kets de Vries, 2001).

Unit 2 Quiz

Question 1 Apply what you have learned about reading comprehension to understanding this short article entitled “A Heavy Duty Job.” The article, written by Daniel McGinn, was published in Newsweek.

Apply the BEFORE READING, DURING READING, AND AFTER READING suggestions and then summarize the article briefly.

“A Heavy Duty Job”

For nurses, it's a job almost as unpleasant as changing bedpans: moving heavy patients from stretchers to beds and back again. With the average U.S. nurse now in her mid-40s and hospitalized Americans growing more supersized each year, patient-schlepping is putting more nurses in danger of being hospitalized themselves. The American Nurses Association estimates 52 percent of its members complain of chronic back pain; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses are more at risk for back strains than construction workers. So at the ANA's biennial convention in Minneapolis this week, nurses will discuss a key lobbying goal: getting more hospitals to enact "no lift" policies requiring that machines, rather than nurses, be responsible for "patient handling."

Many hospitals that specialize in bariatric surgery on obese patients are already equipped with hydraulic equipment–imagine a small crane with a sling on it–for that job. The technology is also widely used in Europe. But in the past year, more U.S. hospitals have begun buying simpler devices: plastic air mattresses with small holes on the bottom. The air mattress slips under the patient, a small pump inflates it and air escapes through the holes, reducing the friction as the patient is pulled between beds. "It's like an upside-down air-hockey table, and the patient's the puck," says Dave Davis of HoverTech International. James Weedling of rival Patient Transfer Industries says: "What's really driving the product now is Worker Compensation claims."

Proponents say the $3,000 devices pay for themselves in a matter of months. Says Sandy Wise of Novation, a Texas firm that helps hospitals buy equipment states: "This is a supply that will become a necessity." If they weren't so pricey and electrified, they also look like they'd be fun at a pool party.

Enter a short summarization of the article below.

Nurses have a lot of demands on the job , For example,  the physical demands and mental  demands .  Nurses are required to  move and lift patients daily.  Because  most of the nurses are aged in the  mid-40's , each Nurse face a health risk increase  .  Medical devices are implemented to assist  Nurses with the lifting so they don't have to risk their own health.

Question 2 Read the paragraph from an article written by Niccola Davies on nursing.

Practice Nursing 2014, Vol 25, No 4

© 2014 MA Healthcare Ltd

Effective nursing requires far more than careful attention to detail, robust medical knowledge, and technical skill.

While nurses must identify and react to a patient’s obvious physical health needs, they also have another critical role—to empathize with the mental state of those they are caring for (Barkin, 2011). This is particularly pertinent in the case of practice nurses, who may be required to provide counseling and impart information, often emotionally charged, to the patient and their family.

Patients with intractable long-term conditions are likely to experience some level of anxiety or distress. The unfamiliar situation, the heightened agitation of family members and those around them, and their own questions about what is happening, can tax the mind and body. This can have an impact on the speed of recovery. However, if a practice nurse can empathize with the patient, the chances of improving treatment outcomes and speed of recovery are greatly increased

Try to identify the writer's main point or thesis in the box below.

The main point of this short essay expresses the importance the role of the nurses play in taking care of the patient's mental and physical needs .

Question 3 If a practice nurse can empathize with the patient, the changes of improving treatment outcomes and speed of recovery are greatly increased.

How does having this statement help both the writer and the audience?

This emphasizes the importance of nurses role in proximity to the patient. In this situation the nurse repeated back what the patient said and expressed understanding.

Question 4 Let's go back to the article on empathy in nursing that you read in a previous activity:

However, if a practice nurse can empathize with the patient, the chances of improving treatment outcomes and speed of recovery are greatly increased.

Remember that you identified the thesis as the last sentence in that paragraph: "if a practice nurse can empathize with the patient, the changes of improving treatment outcomes and speed of recovery are greatly increased."

Which of the following supporting information would the writer need to provide the audience in order to develop this main idea?

Question options:

research evidence showing empathy improves patient speed of recovery

examples of patients who have improved as a result of the care of empathetic nurses

strategies that nurses can use to develop their empathy towards patients

Other strategies that nurses can use to make their job easier

Question 5 Now take a look at 2 more paragraphs from the article on nurses and empathy:

“Practice Effective Listening”

The practice nurse should adopt the habit of genuinely listening to what the patient has to say, rather than focusing on his/her own response. Listening in this way shows respect for the patient’s feelings and opinions, and may encourage reciprocity. Being an effective listener involves active listening, also known as empathic listening or therapeutic listening, which provides vast benefits in the health care environment (Lindquist et al, 2014).

In active listening, the practice nurse restates what has been said, in his/her own words, to ensure that he/she understands the message. For example, if a patient says, ‘I can’t understand why I have to wait so long for answers from you people! And why won’t you give me my pain medication?’ the practice nurse can reply, ‘I hear that you are frustrated that we can’t provide answers quickly. You are in pain right now, and our lack of information doesn’t help matters.’ Although this may sound simplistic, the practice nurse is likely to notice that the patient will almost immediately respond by relaxing slightly. Simply being heard and understood can be a great comfort.

Answer the following question about these paragraphs:

How does this SUPPORTING idea relate to the author's thesis that empathy improves patient healing?

This is supported by showing that the nurse can be empathetic while at the same time be an effective listener.

Lately you notice that the costs for your copying machine and supplies have increased by 43 percent.  Observation and discussion with some of the employees suggest that some employees use the copying machine for personal use. Repair costs may have increased because more people than the two trained office managers have access to the machine.

Why are audience and purpose important considerations when writing to your employees about this situation?

The audience is important because they are employees and the purpose would be the determine why the cost of company copy machine has increased . I think the  employees who are reading this message needs to understand  how the cost involved have increased and provide a solution if some employees have been using the copy machine for personal use  there needs to be a company policy which states this. A solution would be to have a company policy in place and a way to do so is to inform all employees that personal use of copy machine  is limited to supervisors and managers and should they need to use it please ask a manager to assist them.

Question 2

The following is a memo written by one supervisor attempting to address the scenario you have just reviewed:

TO:        All employees working here

FROM: John

SUBJECT:  Copying problems

It has recently been brought to my attention that some of you are abusing the copying machine. Namely, using it for your own purposes.  Doing things like making copies of your kid’s birthday invitations or flyers for your kid’s school festivals or even copying your other personal documents.  This is costing me a lot of money and I need it to cease and desist immediately. Anyone who has been using the copier for purposes other than business or who plans to use it for these purposes and who does not stop immediately will suffer dire consequences.  If you have any questions, let me know.
