Psych Paper 4

Two criticisms of the new DSM-5 suggest that we will see an increase in the number of people being diagnosed with some mental health–related disorder: (1) Too many new categories of disorders have been added, some of which do not yet have consistent research support and (2) there has been a loosening of standards for some existing diagnoses. What do you think about this? With the changes in the DSM, do you think that more people will be diagnosed? Ponder: Since most behaviors are spread across a continuum, how do psychologists know where to draw the line between normality and abnormality? That is, when do we consider a behavior a disorder? Provide an example of what may be an abnormal behavior to some but not to others. To support your ideas review King's Defining And Explaining Abnormal Behavior p498 and include a discussion of at least 2 research articles that have been published in peer-reviewed journals.
