Background

Assume that you are working as a case manager in a mental health center. A college-aged student has come to the mental health center and has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. Specifically, the student is experiencing delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and diminished emotional expression. Assume this patient is from a different cultural group than your own. You may specify any population you like to complete this assignment.

Instructions

As the case manager, it is your responsibility to explain this diagnosis to your patient’s parents and significant other.

In an initial interview with them, the family and partner expressed confusion over why the patient was acting in certain ways, how the patient could be treated, whether the patient would ever get better, and what they could do to help.

Finally, provide them with a list of local and online resources to support them as a family with a schizophrenic member.

Your explanation to them should be based on the latest scientific research and expressed in terms that an average family can understand.

You may prepare this assignment as a brief paper or outline of notes that would be applicable to use in the field.
