unit 1
Graphical displays are used to provide the viewer information that illustrates qualitative or quantitative information about the data set under review. After reading the assigned sections in Chapter 2, please provide an example of where you think a graphical display could be used incorrectly. What ramification(s) do you think could result from the graphical display in your example being used incorrectly?
unit 2
What measures of central tendency, dispersion, or position discussed in Unit 2 have you been reading about or listening to in the news today? For example, lately there have been numerous news reports on the mean price of gas or the median price of homes in a particular state, etc. Is the measure you discuss in your post being used correctly? Why or why not?
What additional questions would you want to ask the author of the news article/story you are discussing to determine if the data they are reporting on is being reported correctly?
UNIT 3
What method of assigning probability (relative frequency, classical, or subjective) discussed in Unit 3 do you feel is the most appropriate to use and why? In your response, please provide an example that is not found in your text.
UNIT 4
After reading the example of where probability values can be used in managerial decision-making to establish a product guarantee, post a comment where you think probability could be used to help solve management questions/problems. Think of something at work, past or present, where you could apply the techniques in the example to assist in making the best decision. If you can’t draw on a life experience, then think of a product/issue where this process could be applied. Please explain your answer.
UNIT 5
Why are sampling distributions important to the study of inferential statistics? In your answer, demonstrate your understanding by providing an example of a sampling distribution from an area such as business, sports, medicine, social science, or another area with which you are familiar.
UNIT 6
Hypothesis testing has come under scrutiny and a sense of skepticism over the past few years by experts in all fields where hypothesis testing is utilized. Based on what you have covered in the course through Unit 7, discuss the pros and cons of hypothesis testing from your viewpoint. Why do you think hypothesis testing can lead to skepticism in general?
UNIT 8A
Question 8 A
Pick any two variables that you feel may be related and estimate what you think the strength of the correlation coefficient would be for those two variables. In your response, estimate the value of r. For example, specify a strong (.7 to .9), medium (.4 to .6), or low (0 to .3) value for r. The value of the coefficient can be positive or negative. For example, consider an increase in police patrols in a neighborhood and the number of burglaries that occur in that neighborhood. I would say that would be a strong inverse relationship with an r value of -0.8; as one (patrols) increases, the other (burglary rate) goes down. Describe the factors that you think would contribute to why the variables would have the relationship that you estimate it to be.
UNIT 8B
Question 8 B
Now that you have completed this course in Statistics, please describe a concept covered in the course that you feel might be of assistance to you now or in the future. For example, using charts and graphs to graphically describe data at your job, or using one of the sampling methods discussed at the beginning of the course to generate sample data. Please be specific in explaining how you would use what you have learned in class to your benefit.
