PURPOSE

The purpose of this paper is to provide the student an opportunity to reflect on selected DNP competencies acquired through the NR703 course and present a self-assessment of skills, knowledge, and integrative abilities to meet the six sub-competencies of DNP Essential II and VI (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2006) as a result of active learning throughout this course.

COURSE OUTCOMES

This assignment provides documentation of student ability to meet the following course outcomes:

CO1: Compare and contrast existing theories of organizational behavior and leadership theory with that of quantum leadership (PO #6).

CO3: Differentiate attributes of effective leaders and followers and related roles in positively influencing advanced nursing practice (PO #6).

CO5: Synthesize evidence of transformational leadership and emotional intelligence necessary for intra-/ interprofessional collaboration in advanced nursing practice (PO #8).

CO10: Ascertain readiness of one’s practice setting for potential advanced nursing practice benefits from the forces of magnetism (PO #6).

POINTS

This assignment is worth a total of 100 points.

REQUIREMENTS

1.            The You Decide Reflection is worth 100 points and will be graded on the quality of self-assessment, use of citations, use of Standard English grammar, sentence structure, and overall organization based on the required components as summarized in the directions and grading criteria/rubric.

2.            Create your essay using Microsoft Word(a part of Microsoft Office), which is the required format for all Chamberlain College of Nursing documents. You can tell that the document is saved as an MS Word document because it will end in “.docx”

3.            Follow the directions and grading criteria closely. Any questions about your essay may be posted under the Q&A forum.

4.            The length of the reflection is to be within three to six pages excluding title page and reference pages.

5.            APA format is required, with both a title page and reference page.

a.            Use the required components of the review as Level 1 headings(upper and lower case, centered, boldface; See APA, pp. 62-63).

PREPARING YOUR REFLECTION

The DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006)outline a number oforganizational and systems leadership competencies in addition to competencies for interprofessional collaboration. Reflect on the NR703course readings, discussion threads, and applications you have completed across this course and write a reflective essay(self-assessment) regarding the extent to which you feel you are now prepared to meet these sub-competencies:

1.            “Develop and evaluate care delivery approaches that meet current and future needs of patient populations based on scientific findings in nursing and other clinical sciences, as well as organizational, political, and economic sciences” (AACN, 2006, p. 10).

2.            “Ensure accountability for quality of healthcare and patient  safety for populations with whom they work; Use advanced communication skills/processes to lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives in healthcare systems; Employ principles of business, finance, economics, and health policy to develop and implement effective plans for practice-level and/or system-wide practice initiatives that will improve the quality of care delivery; Develop and/or monitor budgets for practice initiatives; Analyze the cost-effectiveness of practice initiatives accounting for risk and improvement of healthcare outcomes; Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse organizational cultures and populations, including patients and providers” (AACN, 2006, pp. 10-11).

3.            “Develop and/or evaluate effective strategies for managing the ethical dilemmas inherent in patient care, the healthcare organization, and research” (AACN, 2006, p. 11).

4.            “Employ effective communication and collaborative skills in the development and implementation of practice models, peer review, practice guidelines, health policy, standards of care, and/or other scholarly products” (AACN, 2006, p. 15).

5.            “Lead interprofessional teams in the analysis of complex practice and organizational issues” (AACN, 2006, p.15).

6.            “Employ consultative and leadership skills with intraprofessional and interprofessional teams to create change in healthcare and complex healthcare delivery systems” (AACN, 2006, p. 15).
