NR543 Information Workflow in Healthcare
Week 1 Discussion
Information Workflow and Systems Life Cycle
Describe a process where information might be handled better in your current setting, or a setting familiar to you. What would you change, if you could, to improve information workflow, and what processes and persons would you involve to make these changes?
NR543 Information Workflow in Healthcare
Week 2 Discussion
Needs Analysis and Systems Analysis
Last week for your week 1 assignment you were asked to diagram both a current information workflow that you found problematic as well as propose a revised, improved workflow. In reflection what, if anything would you do differently if you had the opportunity? Are there stakeholders or personnel that you should have spoken with or observed? As you reply to your classmates what questions or suggestions would you offer them?

Week 3 Discussion
Information System Testing
What process would you use to create test scripts for the proposed change(s) you identified in your Workflow Analysis?
What metrics would you establish or use to determine success for each script?

Week 4 Discussion
Health Information Technology Implementation and Training
In consideration of your course lessons, readings, and personal experiences what would you, as informatics nurse specialist, include in the training and/or implementation plans for a new electronic health record that will go-live in the next six months to ensure acceptance and a successful experience? Please provide your rationale.

Week 5 Discussion
Information-System Support and Evaluation
Please post to one of the following threads then respond to a peer who has posted to the alternative thread:
1. As the INS responsible for the implementation of a new electronic health record at your facility what strategies would you employ to ensure a smooth and successful process? Please provide a detailed overview as well as your rationale.
2. You have been asked to develop an evaluation plan and tools relative to the implementation of the new electronic health record at your facility - what would be your major considerations in terms of population, timeline, method? Please provide a detailed overview as well as your rationale.

Week 7 Discussion
Safeguarding Personal Health Information and the Technology that Houses It
As INS you have been given responsibility for the review and revision of all policies relative to the collection, storage, transmission, and retrieval of personal health data as well as corporate computers, computer networks and related resources for your 10 hospital healthcare delivery system that includes ambulatory clinics and owned physician practices. What strategies would you use to accomplish this task and what major areas would you address in the policies? Please provide your rationale.

Week 8 Discussion
Nursing Nomenclature and Terminologies and Using Your Knowledge
What, if any, standardized terminology or nursing language do you have, or would like to have, at your facility? What associated advantages do you see with its use, or potential use, for the creation of information and knowledge in your setting to help identify/address a particular problem?
Also please reflect on how you will use what you have learned during this course moving forward.

Week 1 Assignment
Workflow Analysis
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to
Familiarize the student with the concept of workflow,
Identify potential workflow issues that have implications for the practice of nursing informatics
Acquaint the student with the concept of "stakeholder" in information system design.
Map current and proposed information workflow using flowchart diagrams.
Requirements
Description of the Assignment
This assignment requires the student to examine an information workflow ideally from their current work environment. If the student is not currently employed they can discuss alternatives with their faculty for approval. Some examples of information workflow might include, but are not limited to, the following:
allergy information;
advance directives;
organ donor status;
past medical history details;
past surgical history details;
medications;
use of vitamins and/or supplements;
functional living status;
list of providers;
Insurance claims processing;
Antibiotic resistant infection status
Other as identified by student (subject to faculty approval)
Directions
Map a particular piece of information from its collection and use throughout your organization. Identify what information you have chosen. Include verbal, written, and physical practices (e.g., how information is acquired, stored, distributed, and discarded). Map information workflow using a diagram. The diagram may be drawn using business process modeling notation figures available in Word, Visio, or other software. This assignment should be include a cover sheet, a one page explanation of the chosen workflow and rationale for its selection and a detailed map of current information workflow.
Preparing the Assignment
Required texts may be used as additional references.
The paper includes a coversheet, one-page description of the selected information workflow that includes the organization represented, rationale for selection and two actual or potential issues identified in the process of mapping the current information workflow, and a map of the current and proposed information workflow to improve safety/efficiency
Workflow maps must represent original work of the submitting student.
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and citations are consistent with formal academic writing.
References are not required for this assignment but appropriate credit should be given for the ideas and work of others when used.

Week 3 Assignment
Test Plan
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to
Create a plan to validate the information workflow change proposed in the workflow diagram and analysis assignment week 1;
identify issues that have implications for the practice of nursing informatics; and
acquaint the student with methods to develop test plans.
Requirements
Develop a plan to validate (test) the proposed information workflow change from the workflow diagram and analysis assignment week 1 that demonstrates all the resources and processes required to ensure that your proposed change(s) work as designed without unintended consequences. Develop a plan that considers scope, schedule, acceptable deliverables (desired end products), resources (human, hardware, software, network and/or other equipment, space, budget), risks, and contingencies to validate changes and deliverables BEFORE change would be introduced into a live system. While you may not know exactly how long this would take or all of the resources required put on your thinking cap to propose a timeframe, budget, etc. Make this plan specific to your proposed change(s).
Preparing the Paper
An introduction that presents the topic and describes how the paper is organized.
Paper is comprehensive to include scope, schedule, acceptable deliverables, resources (human, hardware, software, network and/or other equipment, space, budget, need for replacement staff), risks, and contingencies.
A conclusion that presents insights gained from working on the assignment.
A minimum of three scholarly references, excluding course textbooks, is required. Course texts may be used as additional references.
Use APA 6th edition for title page, format of the paper, tables, citations, references, and appendix.
Ideas and information from professional sources must be cited correctly.
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and citations are consistent with formal academic writing.
The length of the paper is to be a maximum of 8 pages excluding the title page and reference pages.

Week 6 Assignment
Usability Assessment
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to
recognize the role of usability considerations in the design, use, and acceptance of technology;
identify features that impact usability; and
compare the merits of different usability-assessment methods.
Due Date: Submit to the Dropbox basket by Sunday 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 6.
Students are given the opportunity to request an extension on assignments for emergent situations. Supporting documentation must be submitted to the assigned faculty. If the student’s request is not approved, the assignment is graded and a late penalty is applied as follows:
Requirements
Select a software application, preferably an information system that you currently use in your work setting, to assess usability. You may personally test the application or solicit the participation of another party. You have the option to do one of the following:
Address a list of questions that you create or adopt from a source that you will identify.
Ask another party, via guided discussion, to assess the usability of the specified function/information system.
Observe a user completing the identified function, noting the length of time required for completion, any obstacles, and at the conclusion of the task, ask for an impression on usability/issues. If you do not currently have access to an automated system, then speak with your instructor to determine a mutually agreeable alternative.
You may wish to use the following reference to formulate your list of questions/observations:
