Module 3 Discussion

Identify one contemporary health care issue in government and discuss the a. social, b. ethical and c. economic impact of the issue related to health policy.  (List the issue and then address a, b, c.)

With the increase in the number of baby boomers reaching retirement age and holding strong political power, what are two economic issues that both the federal and state governments will need to address?

Give one example of how nurses can affect public policy in various appointed positions.

Identify a practice issue and describe the steps you would take to influence a local politician to draft a bill in favor of your concerns.

Go to Congress.gov,  (Links to an external site.), click Legislation at the very top, then check the current Congress on the left margin, and look for bills that are related to your practice issue.  List the bills that are related here, include the bill number and bill name  If none, write NONE and the search terms you used to search for bills of interest to you.

If you were to need the support of one of your legislators specific to a health policy of interest to you, which one of your representatives as you identified in previous Discussion Board Module 2 would you choose as your legislative contact?  Why?  Go to either your state website or back to Congress.gov and see which committees your legislator is on and/or what their policy interests are....this could give you rationale for the why in this item.  Be specific and share what committees he/she is on and/or their policy interests...not all of them but the ones that relate to your rationale.

Module 6 Discussion

In your assigned readings for this module, it is not clear whether the California staffing regulations have improved patient outcomes.  Studies do show that nurse satisfaction has improved and nurses perceive they are providing better care.  Is improving nurse satisfaction a sufficient reason to establish regulation as done in California? Why or Why not?

The American Nurses Association has made a stand on staffing regulations for registered nurses. What is their stance? Name two reasons that the ANA present to support their position.  What are your thoughts on the ANA position?

Several studies have suggested that hospitals responded to staffing regulations by reducing staffing of non-RN personnel. What might be the benefits AND the consequences of reducing non-RN staffing?

Are you in favor of federal regulation for staffing levels?  Provide a rationale.

How can nurses inform and influence the development of health policy related to information technology?

How does the use of information technology in health care affect reimbursement in nursing?

According to Auerbach et al. (2013) the foundation of the US healthcare delivery system is the workforce of tered Nurses.  What are some economic reasons for the current expanding nursing workforce?  What are four uncertainties that threaten the nursing workforce?  How does the ACA affect the nursing workforce according to this article?

In what ways is, or is not, the nursing profession a special interest group in American Democracy? Identify at least two.

What strategies would enhance the effective influence of nurses as a collective special interest group in policy advocacy and electoral politics?  Share at least three, with one of the three being a specific example of using media.

In what ways do nurses (you) benefit from the work of professional nursing organizations?  Identify at least two.

Describe 2 aspects of globalization that are important for nurses to understand. Why are each of these aspects important to you as a nurse?
