Imaginative Empathy
Imaginative empathy is what allows one individual to imaginatively take the role of another so he or she can attempt to understand that person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Frederick Douglass creates imaginative empathy for his readers in his book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself. When the audience reads Douglass’s book, they are able to imagine themselves in Douglass’s situation.
Imaginative Empathy Essay
Exercise the principle of imaginative empathy according to Frederick Douglass when he was trying to explain to his reader what life was like for a fugitive slave: “to understand it one must needs experience it or imagine himself in similar circumstances,” and describe your experience as it relates to the following circumstance:
- What is the worst moral dilemma you ever faced?
- In addition to describing the dilemma, make sure to explain what the potential solutions were
- What types of consequences did you need to prepare for with each potential solution?

Turn in your 2- to 3-page essay by submitting it as a Microsoft Word document. Your example need NOT be derived from work. It could be any personal setting, or even as a patron of a public agency or employee of a non-public agency. Choose the example that gives you the most flexibility in assessing a moral problem in complex and intentional ways. Regarding the template: it is a guide, not a formula. Use it to organize your information, not to fill in boxes. If a category isn't quite descriptive, change it to suit your example. A creative leader creates better tools.
A Note on Individual Assignments: Unlike group work, individual assignments should always be proper essays that reflect the combination of attributes and skills one needs to demonstrate graduate level learning and deploy sophisticated forms of expression that you can control and achieve yourself but that are hard to make the result of group work.

After reviewing the presentation on logical fallacies, get together with your team to create your own list of logical fallacies. For each type of fallacy, come up with an example that illustrates the insufficiency of a claim made using these methods. You may divide the work among your group as you see fit. Create your list together as a team throughout the week here. Your group may use whatever research tools are available to you to identify other examples of logical fallacies or fallacies that are similar to the ones we encountered but that go by a different name. Also, if you are having trouble coming up with a NEW fallacy, take those I provided and offer an illustrative sentence (as I did by example) to demonstrate you understand the principle. Make sure you give an example of each fallacy you identify. Pay attention to the group number to which you have been assigned and post to the corresponding discussion.
