What should you look for when evaluating the quality of health information on Web sites? Here are some suggestions based on our experience:

Consider the source: Use recognized authorities.

Focus on quality: All Web sites are not created equal.

Be a cyberskeptic: Quackery abounds on the Web.

Look for the evidence: Rely on medical research, not opinion.

Check for currency: Look for the latest information.

Beware of bias: What is the purpose? Who is providing the funding? Who pays for the site?

Protect your privacy: Health information should be confidential. Does the site have a privacy policy and tell you what information they collect?

Consult with your health professional: Patient/provider partnerships lead to the best medical decisions.

Health Literacy Reflection

Read the attached article along with the case study below:

You are the nurse assigned to a 60-year-old patient who has been diagnosed with hypertension and will be starting medications. The doctor enters the room right before discharge and tells the patient, “You have hypertension and will need to take medication. Here are the prescriptions for two medications that will decrease your hypertension. You will have to take the pills once a day in the morning when you wake up. I want you to schedule a follow-up appointment and come back to have your blood pressure checked in one week. Do you understand?” The patient nods his head in agreement. Near the clinic waiting room you hear the patient talking to his wife on the phone explaining that the doctor told him that he is “hyper” and that he needs to take pills to decrease this.
