The culture of the deaf and hard of hearing is often overlooked because it is characterized as a nonethnic culture. What cultural characteristics do deaf people have in common with other cultural groups? If your client is both deaf and identifies with another cultural group as well, how does this affect your ability to provide quality cultural care?

Instead of responding to the current discussion questions for Modules 2 and 3, you have the option to complete the Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals Behavioral Health Certificate as described below. Even though it is titled “for Behavioral Health Professionals”, it is very appropriate for all nurses and persons in general. The education for the certificate takes 4-5 hours to complete and there are up to 5.5 contact hours awarded.
If you choose to do the certificate:
- Create a thread by Wednesday in Module 2 and state: I am doing the “Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals Behavioral Health Certificate” so that your faculty knows your plan.
- In Module 3, create a thread and post your certificate. It MUST be completed by 2359 on Sunday of week 3 – no exceptions. A 100% will be entered as the grade or DQ2 and DQ3.

Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals
Behavioral Health Certificate
This is an excellent opportunity that you may want to take advantage of to enhance cultural competency, obtain a USDHHS certificate, and to build your CV. The USDHHS (hhs.gov site) offers several free online training for behavioral health professionals aimed at enhancing cultural competence. The training take between 4-5 hours to complete and there are up to 5.5 contact hours awarded also.
Upon successful completion of the training, there are certificates and CEs awarded. The free training is offered through the USDHHS "Think Cultural Health" site. The site requires registration and will place you directly into the training for the certificate.
