Week 6 Online Check Assignment

Critical Reflection on Theoretical Model

Review slides, Chapter, and Schroeder & Smaldone (2015) Food Insecurities article. Provide  a Critical Reflection and answer  these questions (1-2 sentences each with facts from the article)  - click on "Online Check-in #3" then the "Write Submission" link and type into the box.

Example if using Benner's Skills Acquisition Model the answer might be 1. The theory is very clear that it describes how nurses increase their clinical skills over time and with experience. 2. The theory is very simple, as a foundation to specific theory, each stage builds on the next as nursing skill levels increase with time. 3. The theory is very general and can be used for nurses in any practice area. It describes how nurses improve in one practice area/specialty but also the needs nurses have when they change practice areas. 4. Skill acquistion can be measured empirically through competency assessments but also through observation research. 5. The theory is important because we need to understand what nurses' needs are as they grow professionally.

How clear is this theory? - can it be understood and is consistent?

How simple is this theory? - elements/parts minimal or complex?

How general is this theory? - the scope and breadth, can we apply it to across many situations or populations or is it specific?

How accessible is this theory? - empiric indicators (referents) - identify the concepts in phenomenon we can perceive (especially abstract - Quality of Life)

How important is this theory? - valued nursing goals in practice, research, and education?

Week 8 Online Check Assignment

Middle Range Theory

Using a grand theory and theorist from last week from the Discussion Board (yours or one of your peers), propose a middle-range theory where you apply it to a population you work with and a practice problem you experience. Be brief and simple.

Grand theory:

Patient/client population & problem

My middle-range theory

Applying it

Example: You are a community-based maternal/child RN who performs home visits. Sometimes your clients have experienced physical or emotional trauma during the birthing process. Your response can simply look like this:

Grand theory: Orem's Self-Care Deficit Model

Patient/client population and problem: Postpartum women who have experienced physical or emotional trauma during the birthing process

My Middle-range theory: Self-Care Deficit in Postpartum Women Who Experienced Birth Trauma

Applying it: focuses on assessing her agency (ability to care for herself) and self-care needs demands and functioning (self: sleep/rest, nutrition, birthing related injuries: baby care, other children or demands). Develop nursing interventions to address the deficit in between (engage social network if available).

Click on "Online Check-in #4" then the "Write Submission" link and type into the box. Be brief as noted above.

Week 9 Online Check Assignment

Borrowed Theories

Online Check-in # 5 Borrowed Theories. After watching the recorded lecture respond to this prompt (100-125 words):

Describe when you first remember learning about one theory from each: sociological sciences, behavioral sciences, and biomedical sciences

EXAMPLE:

Sociological: I learned about Leininger's theory in my master's program which was in Hawaii. It was a big deal because the Transcultural Nursing journal is published through the University of Hawaii.

Behavioral: I learned about Freud in my high school psychology class. I remember our teacher was super weird and was creepily focused on some of Freud's work.

Biomedical: Germ theory, I don’t know when I first ‘learned’ the theory but I know I understood germs and how they spread since I was a child. I remember doing an experiment in college microbiology where we cultured different objects like door knobs and bathroom sink faucets to see what grew.

After reading the Villarruel et al. (2001) article, respond to this prompt (75-100 words):

Reflect on how you see one of these theories in your everyday nursing practice (or in nursing practice in general). No example. Just write what you know ????

Click on "Online Check-in #5" then the "Write Submission" box and link and type into the box. Be brief as noted above.

Week 13 Online Check Assignment

Nursing Administration & Management Theories

After reading/reviewing slides, briefly reflect (100-125 words) on ONE of the three prompts

Do you work at a Magnet Institution? Use the information in Box 21-5 (also in slides) to share how well you believe your organization meets the expectations and attracts great nurses who want to stay.

Quality management is focused on ‘customer care’ - both internal (staff) and external (pts, fam, etc). Many nurses feel that their rights and concerns have less priority compared to pts/fam. Describe/reflect on a situation where you felt the nurses/staff needs were managed with high quality.

A description of the Patterns of Knowing in relation to leaders & managers is in the slides. Reflect on a nurse leader or manager you work with (or worked in the past) who possessed the 5 patterns. How did this impact your workplace?
