UPS’s world’s largest fully automated packaging-handling facility can process 416,000 packages per hour. (Worldport: A modern marvel, 2011) is located in Louisville, Kentucky .Thee average number of aircraft and packages serviced per day processes packages from 130 aircraft daily, for an average of 1.6 million packages a day(Worldport: A modern marvel, 2011). The location of the facility provides better weather conditions and short travel times. The Derby City has generally temperate weather and is about a two-hour flight from 75 percent of the US population, and a four-hour flight away from 95 percent of other folks in the nation, which is a key factors to ensure consistent and speedy deliveries. (Santos, A. 2013) For air cargo transportation to work efficiently, good weather and a central location is required. For example, look at the weather conditions in Buffalo New York, in the winter or having a central hub located in Honolulu Hawaii. It is not practical for an air cargo carrier to locate there. Efficiency would be low with skyrocketing fuel cost. It was a wise investment and decision to centrally locate there hub in Louisville since most locations within the U.S. are within a few flight hours, weather conditions allow flight schedules with minimal delays and other business have co-located to improve their shipping capabilities and time. Another benefit of the location is access to another aircraft rapidly if one has an emergency service or repair requirement. Since the facility was first built in 1982, global shipping and online shopping has increased. UPS has help design the current air cargo service of today and will help develop the technologies required in the future.
UPS like any other air carrier has guidelines for packing, weight and size of packages. To ensure that your package arrives safely and on time with these packaging guidelines and procedures developed from UPS research. The guidelines for packaging include:
- Use a rigid box with flaps intact
- Remove any labels, hazardous materials indicators, and other previous shipment markings on the box that are no longer applicable
- Wrap all items separately
- Use adequate cushioning material
- Use strong tape designed for shipping
- Do not use string or paper over-wrap
- Use a single address label that has clear, complete delivery and return information
- Place a duplicate address label inside the package (Packaging guidelines, 2015)
UPS also has established specific weight and size limits for the packages that you send with all UPS services. The restrictions below only pertain to individual packages. There are no limits to the total weight of your shipment or the total number of packages in your shipment.
- Packages can be up to 70kg
- Packages can be up to 419 cm in length and girth combined
- Packages can be up to 270 cm in length
- Packages that weigh more than 31.5kg (25kg within the EU) require a special heavy-package label
- Packages with a large size-to-weight ratio require special pricing and dimensional weight calculations
Note: Packages that exceed UPS weight and size limits are subject to an Over Maximum Limits charge. (Weight and Size, 2015)
In conclusion, Worldport is influences the packaging requirements of its customers and the type of materials handling equipment required for these packages. UPS has conducted test on packing material that ensures minimal loss and damage occurs due to packaging. These requirements are clearly defined for customers to aid them in the packaging function. Requiring the size and weight of these packages also aids them in the building of these unit loads utilizing the building-block concept. Consolidation of several units into larger units improve efficiency in handling and to reduce shipping cost. Handling efficiency can be facilitated by mechanical devices such as pallet jacks, forklifts or other types handling equipment. Several advantages are: additional protection to the cargo, Pilferage is discouraged, and mechanical devices are substituted for manual labor.

1). How do the packaging concepts presented in this module impact the unique requirements associated with air cargo? Go to the website for Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, or another air cargo carrier and report your findings about their air cargo packaging requirements and/or services.
DHL is present in over 220 countries and territories, making it the most international company in the world, with a workforce exceeding 325,000 employees. DHL is part of the postal and logistics Group, Deutsche Post DHL Group and encompasses three divisions: DHL Express, DHL Global Forwarding, Freight and DHL Supply Chain (About, 2015).
Standard airfreight services range from one to seven days of transit time, depending on the priority option selected. DHL offers a special air service called LIFECONEX, an international temperature controlled airfreight. Specifically, customers can benefit from:
- IT Platform - "Life Track" specifically for the Life Science industry
- Network - certified Life Sciences stations and specialists, auditable handling processes
- Quality & Compliance - through quality management system & good distribution practices guidelines
- Cold Chain Design & Implementation - automated SOP change management & version control
- Visibility & Monitoring - in-transit temperature data & monitoring RFID
- Cold Chain Analytics - risk evaluation and mitigation, packaging performance evaluation
- Cold Chain Optimization - packaging validation and qualification, product release optimization and stability (Air, 2015)
Air cargo packaging requirements and advice include:
Boxes
- Boxes are the most commonly used and suitable way to pack shipments because of the range of sizes, shapes, materials and accessories to strengthen and secure them
- Wood containers are especially appropriate for shipping heavier items and are ready for machine handling
- Heavy-duty double-layered cardboard is a suitable and cheaper alternative to wood boxes
Envelopes
- Use cardboard envelopes for lightweight documents
- Use cushioned, padded or bubble envelopes to carry things like discs, tapes, keys and small electronic parts
- Waterproof and anti-static versions are also available
- Do not use envelopes made of fabric
Flyers
- DHL branded flyer bags are available in two sizes:
- Standard DHL Flyer: For flat documents and small binders with a maximum weight of 2 kg
- Large DHL Flyer: For flat documents, ring binders and small boxes with a maximum weight of 3 kg
Tubes
- Use triangular tubes instead of round tube-type cylinders for rolled items
- Round tubes roll – which makes them difficult to handle
- Round tubes cannot pass through the automated sorting equipment generally used in our sorting facilities
- DHL triangular tubes are specially designed to ship maps, blueprints and any type of large flexible document and are available in two sizes for up to 2 kg or 5 kg (Shipping, 2015)
Liquids should be stored in leak-free containers, protected with a lightweight, strong, internal material such as Styrofoam, and sealed within a plastic bag. Semi-liquids, greasy or strong-smelling substances should be sealed with adhesive tape and wrap in grease-resistant paper. Powders and fine grains should be placed in strong plastic bags, securely sealed and then packed in a rigid fiberboard box. Use "Arrow Up" stickers for non-solid materials (Shipping, 2015).
