The classic definition of presidential leadership developed by political scientist Richard Neustadt is that the power of the president is the power to persuade. While watching and listening to him speak, think about how Ury’s ideas about negotiations can be used in your role as a public administrator, and in organizations in general. A more detailed view on Ury’s principles for interest-based negotiations can be found in the book he co-authored, Getting to Yes.


Negotiating Effectively Discussion

After viewing the William Ury TED Talk, write a discussion post about how his discussion might relate to the discussion in the readings on power and politics in organizations. What are the challenges of power and politics in organizations that the readings outline? Does Ury offer insights that you could use in navigating and negotiating organizational politics? Are there significant challenges that his TED Talk does not address?

Post your reaction to the TED Talk to the Negotiating Effectively discussion board to share your thoughts and ideas with your classmates, as well as to learn from their perspectives on effective negotiation and its application to organizations and the public administration field.
