Topic 1: Group and Team Development

As you have learned in the text, social loafing occurs when some members of a team do less work and do not live up to their team responsibilities. When this occurs, typically other team members pick up the extra work to meet the timeline, and often times end up frustrated with the whole team process. One way to prevent social loafing from occurring is to create a team charter. A team charter allows members to break down responsibilities, set goals and timelines for work to be accomplished before it begins. For example, the charter may include the following:

1. Set Goals
2. Who will be responsible for what segment of the project?
3. When are these deliverables due from each member?
4. How will the team communicate? e-mail/online meetings, face to face meetings?
5. How often will team members meet?
6. What is the team project timeline to be able to finish the project on-time?
7. If there are any disagreements or differences of opinion, how will these issues be resolved?

For this Discussion you will be asked to pretend you were placed on a team of four for a school project due in 5 weeks. The project is to write a research paper on group process and respond to the following questions:

1. What information would you be sure a team charter covered and why?
2. How might you prevent social loafing and group think in your team?
3. Where do you think most teams have problems in the group development process and what suggestions might you make to optimize their performance?

• Read the following Scenario:

You work for an organization which operates in a service sector and has more than 500 employees. Recently your company has experienced issues with employee teamwork. Employees seem to be having difficulty working well together in various teams. Your boss has asked you to lead an effort to research ways to create an effective team work environment and give him advice on how to solve the problem. After you conduct your research, you will deliver a presentation to the CEO and Board of Directors on your findings. After viewing the video, reading the textbook, and conducting research in the Kaplan library, complete the following Assignment with your team:

• Decide which team member will be responsible for each checklist item on the last slide of the PowerPoint located below.
• Complete thechecklist:

1) Describe the different types of teams.
2) Describe the determining factors that typify an effective team.
