Data Integration in the Health Care Industry

For this assignment you will research how data integration is used to support data analytics within the health care industry. Use the information covered in the assigned Internet and library research, or any additional research that is necessary, to fill in any gaps in your understanding of the concepts.

Write a 3 to 5 page paper that addresses the following components:

Identify the range of data sources and inputs that are created in the health care industry through the use of biomedical devices, health specialization systems, public health data, and electronic health records.

For example, consider all of the different applications and technologies that were included in the research information. Examples would include patient encounter data, medical, and laboratory testing data, billing and insurance data, hospital and office visit data.

Describe three technologies or methodologies the health care industry uses to integrate all of this data from multiple sources to allow for a cohesive and comprehensive approach to data analysis.

Describe, for example, how the data for EKG, x-rays, and other medical images can be combined with the patient encounter or billing data to allow for analysis of the entire range of information collected about a particular patient. Consider technologies such as data mining tools, interface engines, data marts, or warehouses and the roles that they may play in integrating data for analysis.

List the qualities or characteristics of data that is integrated from multiple sources that make that particular set of data optimal for solving a business problem.

For example, one of the challenges in integration of health care data is the fact that much of the data is collected and stored as narrative data, which is not easily analyzed in that form.
