IST 634 Summer 2022 Term Group Project

This project will give you an opportunity to explore new technologies in the general database systems area. First step: formation of groups. The project will be done in groups of 4 or 5 (no groups less than 4 or more than 5 will be accepted – and because of the size of the class, I can only accept the first 4 groups of 5. If your request comes later, you will have to do a group of 4). You may send me your groups by Monday June 13 9AM. Submit the group using the Blackboard assignment – I only need 1 submission per group. I will form any remaining groups as needed. If you are not in a group, and you have particular colleagues you don’t want to be grouped with you may email me that. Also, if you have less than 4 members you may send me that list. I will try to accommodate, but make no guarantees, except for groups of 5 submitted – those will be guaranteed. Effort should be equal among group members, and I will ask you to document exactly what each member has done. The technologies: each group will use a different technology/tool. The group may choose their own technology/tool as long as it has not been chosen by another group and subject to my approval (the following, among others, may not be used: AWS, Salesforce, MongoDB). Some examples of tools include: Time series database: InfluxDB, Apache Druid, Apache Pinot, Prometheus. Embedded database: SQLite, eXtremeDB, InterBase. NoSQL database: Memcached, Apache Cassandra, ArangoDB, Azure Cosmos DB, OrientDB, Oracle NoSQL, Neo4j, Amazon DynamoDB, HBase, BigTable, Aerospike, Google Cloud Datastore, IBM Cloudant, CouchDB, RavenDB, Redis. Many other possibilities exist. Well established tools (such as Oracle or Excel) may not be used. You should make sure you can procure the tool (open source/freeware or evaluation copy) – I will not help you with this. The project context: You should describe a project which can fit in to the framework of the paper attached to this assignment (Internet of Things for higher education). Be creative! Creativity/inventiveness will be rewarded in the grade more than a rote/simple application. A one page report describing your project will be required. I must approve your group’s project before you move on. The project: You should install/test your technology/tool and implement a prototype of your described project. The prototype may not (probably will not) have all of the functionality of your description, but should demonstrate the concept. Presentation: Projects will be presented during the last week of the semester. You will have 35 minutes. Your presentation must include an introduction to the tool you use and a live demonstration of the tool (hopefully, a demonstration of your project). Attendance at all days of presentation is required.
