International Public Health Nutrition

The WHO Global Nutrition Targets 2025 highlights six public nutrition issues (see below).

  • Stunting
  • Anemia
  • Low birth weight
  • Childhood overweight
  • Breastfeeding
  • Wasting

Find an epidemiological study that addresses one of these issues. The data analyzed in the study must be from outside of the U.S. One example is "Pham, B.N., Silas, V.D., Pomat, W. (2021). Measuring wasting and stunting prevalence among children under 5 years of age and associated risk factors in Papua New Guinea: New Evidence from the Comprehensive Health and Epidemiological Surveillance System. Frontiers in Nutrition. https://doi.org/10.3389/fnut.2021.622660". (Do not use this example)

Journals that are more likely to publish such studies include, but are not limited to, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and Public Health Nutrition. After you identify such a paper, please review the followings in the original post on the DB:

  1. The nutrition issue addressed in the paper.
  2. Study design: observational or interventional study? Retrospective or prospective? Case-control study? If it is an interventional study, what is the intervention?
  3. Subject characteristics: include country of residence, age, sex, race/ethnicity, living environment (urban, rural), education level, and other characteristics if reported.
  4. Data collection: What data or variables were analyzed? If there were dietary intake data, which dietary assessment method(s) was used to collect the intake data?
  5. Risk assessment: How was the relationship between the factors and the nutrition issue evaluated? Did the researchers report prevalence or incidence rate of the nutrition issue? Did they report odds ratio, hazard ratio, relative risk, or another risk estimate?
  6. Discuss how the risk estimate should be interpreted. For example, in the sample study cited above, how to understand the meaning of an odds ratio of 1.2?
  7. Based on the study findings, what approach or strategy would you suggest to help reduce the risk or improve the status of the nutrition issue?
