In 1850 through the early 1900’s the most common causes of death included infectious diseases (i.e., epidemics, pneumonia, influenza, TB, dysentery and cholera), accidents, and accidents (10 leading causes of death, 2010).  There were no antibiotics and many areas had not yet heard of sterilization – for example, during the Civil War, field surgeons went from soldier to soldier doing amputations without cleaning instruments between surgeries.
