HSE303 Week 2 Discussion - The National Weather Service
HSE 303 WK2 Discussion Post
***Same rules as last week! Remember, you're writing another section of your "action plan." Your initial post will be another section of your final project. You do not have to stick with the city mentioned in the scenario. You can tailor them to your city/town, or any other location that makes sense (i.e., preparing for a blizzard in the Florida Keys doesn't seem like an efficient use of time).***
Listed below are topic(s) I would like for each of you to discuss throughout the week. Refer to the textbook, weekly materials, and/or the GMC library when researching the topics for this Discussion Forum. Put your writing into your own words, do not copy directly from the source. If you incorporate external resources in your posts be sure to cite them properly. Lastly, review how to paraphrase and quote resources before you begin posting.
· Please select one of the scenarios to answer. You should provide a well thought out response to how you would handle the situation. The answer to this scenario will be the basis for part of your ?nal project. You will respond to two classmates who selected a different scenario than the one you picked. Once this forum is completed, you will be able to take your response from here and edit it to include any suggested changes or additions to your "action plan" to complete your final project.
· Scenario 1: The National Weather Service predicts the arrival of severe weather in Chicago, Illinois. Your mayor is questioning who would be involved in response activities should a disaster occur. What are some of the participating organizations from the public, private, and nonpro?t sectors? Explain why you have selected those organizations and what they might provide.
· Scenario 2: An earthquake has damaged many of the homes and much of the infrastructure in Anaheim, California. What businesses from the private sector would logically be involved in the response to this disaster? How could you work with them to facilitate recovery?
· Scenario 3: A tornado has struck your community in the Midwest portion of the United States and left many people homeless. As a result, you have had to open up a shelter at a local church. Who could assist you with feeding and mass care issues?
· Scenario 4: You serve as a volunteer emergency manager in a small, rural community in Montana. Your town has been adversely a?ected by a major winter snowstorm – one that has shattered all of the prior records. Roads are impassible and you are worried about the elderly individuals in your jurisdiction.
