History - World History Assignment 1
HIST 103 | PAPER ONE
This assignment is must be uploaded to SafeAssign via the “Major Assignments” tab on Blackboard by 11:59pm on 1 October 2023.Students must read and cite the assigned chapters to complete the assignment, but have flexibility in choosing what they read, to a degree. Students must answer a set of questions, but also have flexibility in which specific questions from a list that they want to answer. Thoroughly read chapter 10 from McNeill’s Something New Under the Sun book. From the Banana Cultures book by John Soluri, thoroughly read the Introduction and Chapters 1, 2, and 3. To be clear, students must read the assigned chapters. Cite all chapters that you consult. Compare and contrast the different cases from these chapters. Students must select four questions to answer thoroughly from the list below. Make it clear in the paper what you are answering. Consider the questions for the paper as you read the text, and collect clear, cited evidence to answer the prompts. Citations must be Chicago/Turabian footnotes in 10-point font and single-spaced lines (follow those two links to see exactly how to construct an accurate citation and to place it within the document). The paper’s text should be in 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins. The paper’s minimum length is 1,100 words. Place only your name in the top left corner and begin writing on the next line of the paper. Submissions must be in either .docx or .pdf formats, otherwise Blackboard will likely reject them. The several content paragraphs must analyze the questions in order with clear, cited, relevant evidence from the book. The conclusion should concisely summarize the major takeaway points of the book and the paper. Write the paper following this analytical progression and follow the questions in order. Develop specific details while avoiding quotations. Answer all the following questions with exact, cited details from the book that prove the argument you make. Consider the questions with analytical clarity and depth. The paper should proceed through the following sections, and each section should represent at least one paragraph. All submissions will be automatically checked for academic honesty by the Safe Assign system.
Use very specific, cited examples.
1) How did economies grow, and what commodities, like bananas, did humans demand? What were the fuels and energies used, and what was the impact of crops and transportation on the natural world?
2) What were the costs and consequences of economic and population? How did human life differ in the 20th century compared to before? What changes occurred in transport, including for commodities like bananas?
3) How do patterns and outcomes of human activities extend far beyond their specific location where commodities are consumed? What were the specific impacts in the people who produced crops like bananas?
4) What were some of the costs that arrived alongside expansions in certain standards of living, like the availability of bananas? Look up the term “negative externality” online. Who, or what, paid for the negative externalities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
5) What were the major impacts on the land and natural world that occurred with the expansion of demand for bananas? How does this relate to larger patters of humans becoming one of the most important agents of ecological change?
