MTH165 ELEMENTARY STATISTICS

Homework Section 4.1

In this section you learned the basics of probability.

What is the definition of “probability”?

Given that definition, explain how you know that you must have done something incorrectly if you compute a probability and get an answer of 32/15?

Use your TI84 calculator to simplify the fraction 1592/6898.

What are the two interpretations of P(E) =

1.            There is a k% ______that the probability will occur

2.            If we perform __an experiment a large number of times, we expect k% probability of occurance

In this section we learned how to compute empirical probabilities.  These are estimates for actual probabilities.  An empirical probability is simply the fraction of times we saw the outcome we were interested in seeing.  What “law” tells us that the more data we collect, the closer this estimate tends to get to the actual probability?

Fill in the following as you work through your given problems in MyOpenMath.

It is important in this section to use the new probability notation that you learned in this section.  That notation will be used for the rest of this course…not just in this section.

1.            Fill in the following in the context of this problem:

Individual:

Variable:

Type of variable:

You were asked to compute the probability of ___

Include a fraction answer and a decimal answer rounded to 3 decimal places.

P(      orange color        ) = _____≈ __________________

event                                                                    fraction                                                                                                                decimal

Interpret the above probability two ways (see bottom of page 112).

1.            _____________________there is a 24.4% chance that orange color occurs

2.            _________________if we perform an experiment a large number of times , we expect that the probability of occurring orange is 0.244 _____________________________________________________________

2.            Fill in the following in the context of your problem:

Individual:  _________________________________________

Variable:  _______________ _____________________________

Type of variable:              qualitative                                           quantitative-discrete                                     quantitative-continuous

You were asked to compute the probability of ___

Include a fraction answer and a decimal answer rounded to 3 decimal places.

P( selecting a pair of defective lenses             ) = ______________________ ≈ _________________

event                                                                    fraction                                                                                                                decimal

3.            Fill in the following in the context of your problem for the first probability asked for:

Individual:

Variable:  ________________________________

Type of variable:

Now compute the 1st probability asked for.  Use proper notation.  Give a fraction and decimal answer.

P(     an indigenous person in prison dies.         ) = ______≈ __________________

event                                                                    fraction                                                                                                                decimal

Fill in the following in the context of this problem for the second probability asked for:

Individual:

Variable:

Type of variable:              qualitative                                           quantitative-discrete                                     quantitative-continuous

Now compute the 2nd probability asked for.  Use proper notation.  Give a fraction and decimal answer.

P(   a non-indigenous person in prison dies           ) = ______________________ ≈ __________________

event                                                                    fraction                                                                                                                decimal

Now compare and discuss what these numbers mean.

4.            Fill in the following in the context of your problem:

Individual:

Variable:  __ ___________ _______________________________

Type of variable:

You were asked to compute the probability of ____

Include a fraction answer and a decimal answer rounded to 3 decimal places.

P(              ) = ___________≈ ____

event                                                                    fraction                                                                                                                decimal
