Look at images 1.4.26a and 1.4.26b by Josef Albers below (or in textbook).

Albers.jpg

I want you to create your own versions! You can use Microsoft Word to do this assignment, which is probably the easiest for most (you should all have it in your Microsoft 365).

Here are the steps to create your own artwork!

Assignment 5

This assignment was locked Sep 9 at 11:59pm.

Audio recording explaining this assignment is embedded below for those who would like to use it. (It is my first time using this....yay technology!)

(You must read our sections for this week before completing this assignment)

Looking at the section 1.10 in our textbook, I want you to choose only 1 artwork to practice forming an analysis.

Use one of the methods of analysis that this section discusses (formal, iconographic, contextual, biographical, feminist, or psychological) to formulate a concise analysis of just 1 artwork from this section that you choose.

Play media comment.

Present your analysis in a PowerPoint  (or another slide show program just not an apple file please) to make it nice and organized. I expect you to have the following:

Slide #1:Title Slide (Your  name and class name) & Page # of the artwork you chose

Slide #2: Artwork information (Title, year created, medium (oil paint, woodcut, etc.)) and Image

Slide #3: Clearly stating which method of analysis you are using

Slide #4: The meaning of the artwork with supporting evidence (4 sentences minimum)

Slide #4: Vocab you have learned is used (You can just list the vocab words you used)

Slide #5: Work cited page of any sources you used (not Wiki please)

For example, I may choose to analyze Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. After doing some preliminary research and looking at the time it was created, I know that this painting was created around WWII and that would have an impact on interpreting it. So, I would choose to use a contextual analysis to break down the meaning of this artwork.  Or maybe I want to do a psychological analysis on Edvard Munch's The Scream.

It is up to you! However, your analysis choice should make sense. I wouldn't use a formal analysis  to write about The Scream since the research shows that his psych heavily motivated him to create. Later on, you will learn to use most of these different methods together to form one awesomely powerful analysis. But for now, we are practicing just 1 method.

What is your opinion? Discuss using examples to illustrate your argument. (min. 6 sentences)
