For this discussion, I want each of you to tell me what you think art is and 3 reasons why it matters to you. (50 points)

You must respond to at least 2 different student's threads. (50 points)

It cannot just be "I agree with you" or "That is cool," your responses need some substance and length. If it is too short or is too general points will be taken off.

What do you think Art is?            

3 Reasons Why it matters to you              

You do not have to respond to other student's posts this week, but starting next week you will.               Responding to others' posts this week is optional.

There is absolutely no hurtful or negative criticism or responses allowed. Constructive criticism only. First offense will be a warning, after that you will receive a zero for your discussion board that week. If it continues, it will be reported to the chair and dean.  Also, if I see any plagiarism (copying or re-stating another's response), you will receive a zero and a warning on the first offense. Second offense I will report it.

Please, let's keep this a positive and fun community atmosphere.

Reminder: There are no late grades for Discussion Boards. Once they close, they stay closed. So do not put this off.

Explain how line can communicate emotions in an artwork and give at least one example to support your response. The example does not have to be from our book. If you are able to share an image or link that is great, if not just describe the artwork as best you can.

Make sure to give a thorough and thoughtful response, not just "yeah I agree." Also, remember to be constructive and respectful of other's opinions.

Post your Assignment #4 here (25 points) and include your written response(25 points).

Be specific in your responses and not vague ("I agree with you"). Keep the dialogue flowing. Be respectful of other's creations, and remember we all perceive color differently!

Looking at Leonardo DaVinci's The Last Supper, what is the focal point of this painting and how did the artist emphasize it? Use the vocabulary you have learned so far. (if you do not know you can look it up to better understand and explain)

Painting is widely regarded as the most popular artistic medium and is the one that most people associate with the practice of visual art.

Discuss why this might be. Why not sculpture or architecture? Explain why painting is seen as the most popular.

Look at both Artemisia Gentileschi and Caravaggio's renditions of Judith Decapitating Holofernes (page 478).

Compare the 2 different perspectives of the artists as seen in their paintings.

How are they different?

How are they similar?

Does Gentileschi's painting differ in perspective because she is a woman? How or how not?
