For this exercise you will be asked to plot an historical and/or visualtour of Melbourne for an international or national visitor, or for local Melburnians. You have the option of creating a tour that focuses on Melbourne’s social and cultural history OR on a specific precinct in Melbourne with particular cultural or ethnic significance (such as Lygon Street, Sydney Road, Balaclava, Chinatown, Acland Street, Footscray etc).

You will be writing this tour as a proposal. Imagine you are asking for funding for your project, you will need to justify why this tour, this route and demonstrate that you have a clear audience and outcomes in mind. Good tours will have a cohesive overarching set of ideas and will link the various stops together.

Use the template provided below. You may add maps and photographs to demonstrate your route and aid the reader in understanding the significance of a particular site.

This task will require you to:

· outline who your visitor is, their interests, and why you are taking them on this tour – in other words, your tour brief.

· Identifyat least six sites that you consider to be culturally, visually or historically significant. These should include some of Melbourne’s many cultural and collecting institutions, as well as galleries, public spaces, buildings and monuments.

· provide a brief written description of the aims of your tour of central Melbourne (ie: what do you wish to show your visitor and why?; how are these sites historically or culturally significant?)

· discuss your sites with reference (brief as this may be) to at least 3 Required Readings from this subject. You may include other information about the sites, of course.

· follow proper procedures for referencing and footnoting – see the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies website: http://shaps.unimelb.edu.au/students/essay-guide/

· include a Bibliography of works cited

This task is designed to get you to think critically about how people move through Melbourne and in particular, about the links between identity and place. When choosing your sites think about how they are important for facilitating the interaction between different groups of people and, between the past and the present. Consider how ideas about Australian identities, genders, ethnicities, histories and cultures are inscribed spatially and visually in Melbourne’s streetscape.

The following reading, while not required, may prove to be useful in considering the ideas of how people walk through cities. You should also consider Michel de Certeau’s work that we discussed in tutorials.

· Virginia Woolf, Street Haunting: A London Adventure, Westgate Press, San Francisco, 1930 as reprinted in Street Haunting and Other Essays,Vintage Books, London, 2014, pp.225-240, 250 Woolf Street Haunting.pdf

Walking in the City Proposal Template?800-1000 words)

Title of Tour:The name should give some indication of what will be included. Eg Public Art in St Kilda, or Significant Chinese culture in the western suburbs.

Intended Audience:International visitors, locals, teenagers, families, etc

Aims of the Tour:What do you want your audience to take away from the tour? What do you want them to understand better having completed it.

Mode of Tour:eg walking only, walking and tram, walking and cycling, walking and riverboat. etc

Theoretical/Intellectual Background: you should design a tour that reflects some of the ideas we’ve talked about in class or on site visits. In this section discuss how your tour reflects those ideas. This section should refer to sources from within your reader and be properly referenced. (550words)

Intended Route and Significance for each stop (6-8 in total):

For example

Stop 1:Place X, 15 Collins Street, Melbourne CBD.

Description/Special Instruction:Stand on the north side of the street, look up at the mural on the first floor of the building.

Significance of this stop: eg The mural was designed by Artist Y and is a well preserved example of the Art Deco movement in Melbourne . By observing this mural from this vantage point, participants will be able to recognize the importance of heritage preservation of these buildings.
