Excelsior SOC323 Continuum of Deviant Social Structures Project

Question Description
Continuum of Deviant Social Structures
Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to:
1. Explain the concept of social deviance and provide examples of deviant behavior in social context.
4. Apply appropriate social science theories and methodologies to do an in-depth analysis of an important question, issue or problem (Social Science Learning Outcome 2).
5. Assess contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice (Criminal Justice Major Outcome 4).
6. Identify ethical problems faced by individuals or communities and propose reasonable solutions (General Education Outcome 5).
For this project, use Best & Luckenbill’s continuum of deviant organizations to explain how a person or group could become increasingly invested in his/her deviance. For example, consider how a youth from a gang-impacted area could move his/her way through from less organized to more organized deviant social organizations, and imagine how this would ultimately impact his/her identity formation. Describe how these various levels of social structure could impact one’s commitment to a deviant identity. Choose a deviant behavior, either from real life or from media, and follow this continuum through with your example.
This project should be 750-1000 words in length and should draw on the readings from this module and the discussions in this module.
Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer.
