Assignment 3
Answer each question as directed. To receive full credit you MUST show all work (I prefer hand-written,
unless you have an accommodation on record with the success center that precludes it). You can scan
your answers or take a picture with your phone and paste it into a document.
Bear in mind, however, that IF I CAN’T READ IT I CAN’T GIVE YOU CREDIT. 1. If you select 1 card at random from a standard deck of 52 cards (shuffled well), what is the
probability of drawing:
a. If 1 card is drawn: A face card
b. If 1 card is drawn: A 7
c. If 1 card is drawn: A 7 or a red card
(remember, there are 2 red 7s in the deck – make sure to account for that in your calculation) d. If 2 cards are drawn: one card is a 6, the other is a 5
2. If you have a bag that contains 12 white marbles, 13 black marbles, 3 red marbles, and 8 blue
marbles, what is the likelihood of drawing:
a. If 1 marble is drawn: a red marble
b. If 1 marble is drawn: a white marble
c. If 1 marble is drawn: a red or a blue marble
d. If 2 marbles are drawn: a red and a white (in any order)
e. If 2 marbles are drawn: a red and a black (in that order)
3. You have a bag that contains 3 apples, 2 pears, 7 onions, and 4 tomatoes. If you were to remove
2 items from the bag at random (so you do not know what kind of item is being removed) what
are the chances that:
a. The items are both pears (if the first item is replaced after its type is noted)
b. The items are both onions (if the first item is not replaced after its type is noted)
c. One item is a tomato and the other is a pear (in any order)
d. Both items are fruit ENVM 502

4. You sample water from a monitoring well next to an underground storage tank. The last 15
measurements for the presence of coliform bacteria and the measured concentration of
nitrogen as nitrate are: 7/1, present, 0.01 ppm; 6/17, absent, 0.01 ppm; 3/12, absent, 0.03 ppm;
9/1, present, 0.18 ppm; 5/10, absent, 1.8 ppm; 5/20, absent, 2.0 ppm; 7/9, absent, 0.04 ppm;
4/11, present, 2.1 ppm; 4/22, absent, 3.1 ppm; 6/4, present, 2.2 ppm; 6/28, present, 0.1 ppm;
8/6, absent, 0.99 ppm; 8/12, present, 2.7 ppm; 9/25 absent, 1.3 ppm; 3/22, present, 2.9 ppm.
a. Organize the data into a clear table using the guidelines from the lecture notes, be sure
to include units and labels wherever appropriate (you can draw the table by hand or use
software) b. Calculate the empirical probability that the next test will show the presence of coliform
bacteria
c. Calculate the mean, median, mode and standard deviation of the measurements of
nitrate (you do not have to show your work for the calculation of standard deviation).
d. Create a graph of the nitrate concentration vs. time. Make sure there is a clear title, all
axes are labeled, etc. Is there a clear pattern in the observed concentrations? Is there a
pattern in the absence or presence of coliform?
