2. Your Prewriting: With your thesis in mind, perform prewriting.

a. Brainstorm for a list of five reasons your stance is important and valid and write those five reasons below.

b. Brainstorm for a list of five reasonable opposing arguments others may make against your thesis/stance and write those five opposing arguments below.

3. Your Introduction Paragraph Draft: After carefully studying the techniques for writing good argument essay introduction paragraphs in your book, in the lesson, and via your Discussion participation, please write the first draft of your full introduction paragraph for your argument research essay. Keep in mind: Overview of issue and existing debate, clearly stated thesis that asserts your particular stance and angle within the debate.

Please remember the sample introduction paragraph section from the Week 2 Lesson and model your introduction paragraph carefully on that example, also reading the explanation for each part of the introduction paragraph in the lesson.

4. Your Argument Plan

Claim: Please note your thesis here: Write your thesis here in at least one full sentence.

Grounds, Warrant, and Backing: Below, provide two pieces of evidence and explain how each supports your claim.

First quotation or paraphrase from a source with full APA in-text citation:

Example: According to Macie Lopez, Ph.D., “Parents are never equipped to handle the grief that comes with losing a child” (2020, p. 34).

Now, use logic to explain in at least two sentences how this evidence supports your claim:

Insert your explanation here in at least two full sentences.

Second quotation or paraphrase from a source with full APA in-text citation:

Example: Parents who lose a child are often isolated because of the stigma and therefore are less likely to seek their own help and support system (Ngari, 2019).

Now, use logic to explain in at least two sentences how this evidence supports your claim:

Insert your explanation here in at least two full sentences.

Counterclaim: Note at least one strong counter-argument that others might reasonably make. This may be a logical reason that you have thought about, or it may be an opposing viewpoint you discovered via research.

In at least two sentences, provide the opposing viewpoint here. If you use a source, please apply proper conventions for introducing, integrating, and citing the source.

Rebuttal: What can you say, using logic and/or evidence, that will effectively refute the above counterclaim?

In at least three sentences, refute the above opposing viewpoint with sound logic. This may be just your own sound logic without a source. Or, it may be a combination of a source and your logical explanation of how the source truly refutes the above opposition. Do not re-use a source from your work in any section above.

5. Your Tentative Sources: Please create a list of at least six scholarly sources you are currently examining, including those you cited above. Three must be sources that in some way support your stance, and three must be sources that in some way oppose your stance. You must construct this list in full APA format and with each source employing full and correct APA standards.
