2. “Muda” is the Japanese word meaning “waste”. The goal in lean manufacturing is to identify and eliminate Muda. Describe how the Just-in-time (JIT) approach eliminates Muda and optimizes warehouse inventory. Describe at least one other approach to eliminating Muda.

1. Many leading retailers such as Amazon, Home Depot and Office Max are leading the way in warehousing and delivery service automation. For example, Amazon is using autonomous Kiva robots to completely redefine the picking process. Research a leading manufacturer who is implementing advanced warehousing technology and write a brief description describing the technology, the level of commitment the company has in the technology.
2. 2. OSHA plays an important role in warehouse facility safety. Google “OSHA warehouse accidents” and select from www.osha.gov a recent warehouse accident that resulted in a fatality. Write an abstract (no more than ½ page) describing the accident, the outcome of the OSHA investigation and the OSHA citation(s). Do you agree with the OSHA findings and citation? As a warehouse manager, what changes would you make to prevent this from happening again?
