http://www.nber.org/
Understanding, interpreting, and managing economic data is a critical success factor in making proper individual and business decisions. Week 5, Objective 3 is only accomplished by ‘doing’; by working and manipulating data and presenting it in a way that allows for an intuitive and useful format. Additionally, communication of that data, determining which data is important is a key outcome of analysis.
This week you have been introduced to various data series and quantitative relationships and sources of economic data.
In this assignment, you will take on the role of a business reporter for the Center for Economic Forecasting.
Choose from one of the following examples of economic series (or find one of your own) and report on a significant trend that you observe, and feel is newsworthy for the business audience. Retrieve data from the site and present a tabular and/or graphical presentation of the data series highlighting appropriate years and trends.
Consider examples within the reading. Also consider focusing in on a specific GDP or income component e.g. durable goods, personal income, defense, exports or imports, corporate profits or personal tax.
Many of the websites have tools that both pull meta data from user selections and graphing capabilities. You may have to pull data and use Excel to graph the trends. Be creative and search and play in the data sandbox.
Your deliverable is a 2-3 page article. Your ‘business news’ should contain an introduction of your data selection and the purpose of the article, a focus on your stakeholder audience, education related to the definition of the series and how the theory of your trend may impact or be of special analytical interest to your audience. Include cover page and references etc.
In a final paragraph of the article, share your learning on this assignment and a bridge or comment to your current or past career or business experience. See the rubric for specific inclusions
