ECON 152 Growth Essay Leeds

ECON 152 Growth Essay Leeds
Read “How does your garden grow?” The Economist, November 3, 2018.
The purpose of the essay is to apply the material we covered in Chapters 11 & 17, with a focus on the factors that encourage long-term growth. I do not expect you to look up any other sources. If you do, however, you must cite them fully and quote as necessary.
If you lift more than three consecutive words from this article, you must use quotation marks.
You do not need any references or page numbers because I know the source.
Write an approximately 500-word essay using size 12 font and standard margins. Double space it and keep it to no more than two pages.
In the first paragraph, introduce the topic of growth: Explain what economists mean by growth, how they measure it, and why they consider it important. Rely on your text and notes and make sure to use quotation marks as appropriate.
In the second paragraph, compare the first paragraph of the article to Robinson Crusoe’s economy. What kinds of factors (“determinants of productivity,” Section 17-2b) are helping Mr. Shumulo? Look for at least three.
Read the paragraph that starts with “Ideally,… .” In your third paragraph, explain what role the government should play in supporting agriculture and growth. Refer to the material we studied Chapter 11. How successfully have governments in Africa supported agricultural development? (Do not get bogged down or overwhelmed by all the details presented in the middle part of the article.)
I stated in class that democracies are better for growth than dictatorships because they tend to provide better economic policy. In the fourth paragraph, explain if this statement is supported by the article. (The last part of the article is not as well organized as it should be, but do your best.)
