Discussion

International healthcare often intertwines with human rights issues. One of these issues concerns child brides. Throughout the world, the problem of early, forced marriage of children is considered to be a violation of basic human rights. Most of the continuation of marrying girls off early (between the ages of 7 and 16), often to much older men, has cultural, economic, and religious ties. Early, forced marriage occurs most often in Niger, Bangladesh, Chad, Mali, Central African Republic, India, Guinea, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, and Nepal, but it is estimated that 49 countries have significant child bride problems.

Please watch this video: https://www.girlsnotbrides.org/new-video-traditions-can-change-ending-child-marriage/ and review this information https://www.unicef.org/media/files/Child_Marriage_Report_7_17_LR..pdf

In your initial post, discuss:

  • why early, forced marriage is considered a human rights issue
  • how it impacts international healthcare
  • the consequences of child marriage
  • why it is considered a global ethical issue associated with reproductive health
