Sharpening Skills

Welcome to your first graded discussion topic! The purpose of the discussion forums is to exchange ideas and share our understanding of the concepts introduced in the assigned textbook chapters. Week 2 Discussion

Goal Setting with the ABCS and CSFI

This week you have been introduced to the (College Success Factors Index) CSFI. This assessment will help you as a student to analyze patterns, behaviors, and attitudes in 10 different areas. Those areas are responsibility/control, competition, task planning, expectations, family involvement, college involvement, time management, wellness, precision, and persistence.

Each goal we set, whether it be short term, mid-range, or long-term, is impacted by the decisions we make each day.  A short-term goal may be as simple as getting your first threaded discussion post in by Wednesday; that is a short-term goal, if not met, could affect your mid-range goal of passing this course in conjunction with your long-term goal to graduate and earn your degree.

Our author continually tells us how important decisions are to meet our goals and how our goals influence our choices. With this in mind, let’s progress forward with the ABCS.

Activate Your Reading Strategies

This week, you were introduced to two study strategies to help you become a more active learner: the SQ3R and 3R. Chapter 3 presents you with additional active learning strategies and tools.

Watch the Crash Course video below, where you will learn strategies to increase your reading speed and retain more of what you read.

Then review the many active learning strategies discussed in Chapter 3, along with the information in the Week 3 Lesson and view the videos.

Based on what you have learned, discuss a specific strategy you, will choose to implement to improve elements of your reading, including speed, comprehension, and retention.

Time Management as a Skill

Time management is a skill that will be indispensable to you in every facet of your life in the present and the future. In your exploration of time management, you will assess your current time management strategies and the obstacles you face in managing your time.  As such, let's explore this topic together.

Demonstrating Knowledge and Skills

Your first post is to answer the following in an AUDIO RESPONSE:

Access the internet and find two websites that provide detailed information about a career you find interesting. Next, evaluate those websites in terms of the following:

The validity of the source

The purpose of the site

The recency of the information

The accuracy of the information.

Remember, the purpose is to critique the website only, not to discuss the career information.

This week you are going to make an audio response by using the Canvas built-in audio recording tool, Kaltura. If Kaltura is not compatible with your electronic device, another option is using Narrated PowerPoint. The third, and most straightforward option, I think, is to use the record/upload media button that is available in the threaded discussion menu once you select the reply option.

Make sure to speak and articulate your ideas clearly.

Record yourself multiple times until you create a well-produced response.

Record yourself for at least 90 seconds and do not exceed five minutes.

If you would like to make a video with Kaltura instead of just an audio response, you can make an audio response with a PowerPoint slide as well.

Week 6 Discussion

Social Media Presence

Being conscionable about your social media presence is essential. If you are like most students, social media is probably a vital part of your life. Employers are using social media more as part of the hiring screening process (Harrington, 2019). Being conscious of your social media footprint is being proactive with your path to success.

For your 1st post your answer to the following:

Employers do have the right to access public information about a candidate and can choose not to hire someone with questionable character or moral values (Harrington, 2019). Many employers have reported they did not hire a candidate due to content found on social media sites. See the Social Media Figure in your textbook on page 181 for social media-related reasons for not being offered employment (Harrington, 2019).

Based on the information in Chapter 6, what are some steps that you could take to ensure you have a positive social media image?

Critical Thinking About Self

Stress is an unavoidable outcome of our busy, contemporary lives where family, work, finances, and now school place such heavy demands on our time and energy. It is safe to say that the ability to manage stress can be the determining factor in achieving long-term success and happiness. The reading this week, Chapter 7, defines stress, identifies everyday stressors, and offers coping mechanisms for mitigating stress. Before getting started in the discussion this week, take the time to explore this chapter and its brief assessments (Harrington, 2019).

Let's use this discussion forum to explore stress in general and stressors in particular. Let's exchange ideas on stress management techniques. Admittedly, there are things we can learn from one another in sharing our thoughts on this subject.
