W4B - Assignment - Fulfillment and Logistics: To Outsource or Not (4 pts.)
NOTE: This assignment is worth double the points (4) since it covers a week's work. Start early!
A friend of a colleague of mine recently started (as of 05/02/2015) Canopy New York, a clothing line that specializes in UV protective fabric. She's doing pretty well, and is now in her third round of funding. Her total sales are near $2M per year with a volume of 13,000 pieces. She's faced with an important choice, whether to build her own fulfillment and logistics infrastructure or to outsource the work to a 3rd-party such as (as of 05/02/2015) Bergen Logistics. BTW, her initial seed capital came from (as of 05/02/2015) Kickstarter.
Help this entrepreneur with her decision by providing a short, effective powerpoint presentation that explains all the functionality and technology infrastructure that she'll need if Canopy goes it alone. In the Notes section of each slide, outline what you'd say as you presented each slide.
Due by Sunday noon EDT.
W4B - Case Study - Consumer Travel Technologies
A friend of mine recently took a long summer vacation to Istanbul, Palermo, London, Florence, and Rome, and was amazed at the array of technologies that are now available to help travelers with their vacation. Technologies impacted his planning, e.g., looking for places to see and good restaurants, searching for the kinds of hotels that he'd like in the kind of neighborhood that he wanted to stay in, reservations. Technology impacted many tactical issues during the trip, e.g., checking in, navigating…
Your assignment is to create a roadmap of strategic and operational technologies used by consumers for travel. You must identify the technologies, their functionality, how the technologies changed the users experience of travel, and the value added. Also, think about yesterday and today. Tell us what technologies/people these new technologies replaced and what might be on the horizon in this space. Incorporate at least three higher-level theoretical concepts from the readings covered to date during the first eight weeks of class.
The breadth of travel functions/technologies is expansive. Functions include planning, reserving, buying, navigating, and other travel related activities. You can draw on your experience, search on the internet, or interview users.
Your roadmap can come in the form of a document, flowcharts, graphics, or any other way that you can best present your ideas. Feel free to speak to other about the best way to present your ideas, but you have to do the design and implementation. In practice, I always consult with colleagues on the best ways to be creative. You can work in pairs on this case.
