COUN 6204A Week 2 Discussion….03.07.22: Standardized and Nonstandardized Assessments
Standardized assessments are formal assessments that are administered under specific rules and conditions. Proctors administer tests in a “standard” manner, ensuring precise timing and scoring. Following the administration of standardized tests, individuals’ test scores are compared to others’ test scores generated from testing under replicable conditions. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory®-2 (MMPI®-2) is an example of a standardized assessment used in the testing of adult psychopathology. It is a standardized assessment because test administration and scoring follow a set procedure.
Nonstandardized assessments are informal assessments that do not conform to the same rules and procedures used with standardized assessments. Counselors do not assign scores based on fixed, scaled scores or compare scores across test takers. An example of a nonstandardized assessment could be a genogram used in an intake interview. This visual depiction of a client’s family relationships, medical history, and other background information varies in format and testing conditions.
For this Discussion, view the media titled Multicultural and Contextual Considerations Case Study: Marisol in the Learning Resources. Then, consider the standardized and nonstandardized assessment possibilities for this client. Return to the Mental Measurements Yearbook to identify a standardized assessment to evaluate Marisol’s addictive behaviors.
POST
Post an example of one standardized and one nonstandardized assessment instrument to assess Marisol’s addictive behaviors other than the MMPI or genogram. Be specific. Then explain the benefits and limitations of each assessment instrument you selected.
