Week 8 discussion
Synthesizing Concepts
Your book has addressed some big themes, such as:
1) Technology - its effects on all aspects of our lives from self-knowledge to relationships, work, and our understandings of others.
2) Work and Family Life - To an extent, this course is designed to help you understand practical aspects of communication in your family and work life. Think about how this course has put certain behaviors or people into a clearer perspective. You may now understand better why long-distance relationships are hard to maintain, what to do in a new job situation, or how to look for nonverbal signals about a company's values.
3) Aging and Health - As an aging society, communication research is looking more into how to help the aging process. Communications researchers have always assisted the health professionals concerned with improving behaviors that will lead to great health and will postpone or eliminate health declines.
4) Diversity - knowing better what is going on in communication will help in an increasingly diverse culture.
It also investigated careers in communications and advised you to keep up on your technology skills. Kind of obvious, but good to think about as you move from your student life into furthering your career.
So, what was your big "ah, ha!" moment in this course as you were grappling with the material? And thinking back across the semester, which concept, theory, and/or questions that we reviewed surprised or intrigued you the most? Why? Spend some time, too, explaining what you got out of the study group presentations and what you learned about small group communication from your participation in your group's deliberations. Do you have any other thoughts you would like to share about this course?
Please respond with a thoughtful ~500-word reflection by mid-week so that your classmates can interact with you one more time before the course ends on Sunday.
