Curriculum Design: Part 3 -

Curriculum Map Assignment Instructions

Video instructions that accompany these written instructions are available under the Module 4 Watch Items. Be sure to include the revised edition of Parts 1–2 in your submission.

Overview

How can you know if students in your program should be expected to meet your designed program learning outcomes? How can you know if the courses in your program will adequately contribute to meeting those program learning outcomes? A curriculum map is an excellent way for you to discover and determine where program learning outcomes can be accomplished at various levels throughout your degree program.

Instructions

For this portion of your Curriculum Design Project, you need to design a curriculum map.

1. Find the example below and discover how a curriculum map is designed.

A. The far-left column should contain the list of courses in the degree program

B. The top row should contain the program learning outcomes.

C. Note how for each course, I, E, or R (or, at times nothing or combinations of I/E/R)

1. See the template for definitions of each of these initials

2. When completed you can view where each learning outcome is supported (and to what degree, I/E/R)

3. Note: while not every course will touch every learning outcome, your map must show how each learning outcome achieves all three levels of I, E, & R. If there are gaps, that is an indicator that either your program needs improvement or a program learning outcome may not be realistic. In the example below, the fourth learning outcome needs to be improved because it lacks I (introduce.) A review of this program would reveal that the curriculum needs to be strengthened to ensure that concepts related to this outcome are introduced somewhere in the course offerings.

2. Complete your own curriculum map using the blank template.

A. In the far-left column, enter the courses for the program you are designing.

B. Across the top row, enter the program learning outcomes for your program.

C. Using I (introduce), E (emphasize), R (reinforce) complete your curriculum map

1. Note that not every course touches every learning outcomes; blanks are permitted.

2. Note that, at times, a course might have more than one letter (I/E/R)

D. Discover whether or not you can foresee each learning outcome being adequately met based on the curriculum map.

Example

Special note: you may struggle a little with this since this project does not require you to write course descriptions and learning outcomes for every single course. Just do your best to envision what each course you have listed will accomplish in relationship to the program learning outcomes.
