Coffee Date with Vygotsky and Piaget
Two prominent names in child development theories are Piaget and Vygotsky. Through research they both bring significant applicable theories that can be viewed daily as we observe children in our care. When we plan experiences for children in our classrooms, it is wise to consider the impact of educational theories.
Read the viewpoint selection Coffee Date with Piaget. Coffee date with Piaget.pdf There were four points discussed as to how his theories would be applied. Research Lev Vygotsky and create your own coffee date (4 points) with Vygotsky using Piaget as the guide.

Unit 3 Discussion
Technology
Technology is changing the way we look at the world. As in any new behavior, we need balance, modifications, intentionality and responsibility to appropriately integrate technology tools in the classroom. Technology in Early childhood is a topic where people have strong feelings either for or against. Change isn't easy for anyone and most of us were not born with technology but into technology, which means we have to adapt to this form of communication and problem solving.
Think about the evolution of a camera from one that had flash bulbs and film rolls, to Polaroid with instant pictures, to 35 mm and zoom lens to today using an ipad or cell phone that captures pictures, videos, has editing functions to save, email, share and delete all on one device. Technology is here, for better or worse, we need to model and teach responsibility. We all realize the negative of seeing devices used for babysitting or electronic worksheets and we do not set up a computer or technology center, we integrate the tools into engaging centers.
After reading the resources on digital cameras, apps and ipads and researching tools such as, Osmo, Tiggly, Dash and Dot, Proscope mobile and Ozobot, come to the discussion board with how you would create an appropriate digital classroom. Consider things like your curriculum, how you would approach it with the children, how much time would be spent on these tools, and why you think it's important to connect these tools to your classroom areas.

Moving Water
Consider the following scenario:
There is a full bucket of water on the floor in the middle of the room, and an empty bucket four feet away. Your challenge is to devise a system that would move the water from the full bucket to the empty one. You can move the water in whatever fashion you wish, but you cannot lift or move either of the buckets. Use whatever materials you want to create your system.
Describe your thinking and the process and tools you would use if you were to do this yourself in your answer post.
Compare what you did to what others did. How creative were the other solutions? Did others move the water more effectively than you did? Please reply to two classmates on these questions.
How would you guide your students and what questions would you ask? What words would you highlight during this process and use examples for your third and final reply post.

Group Activity Sharing
This is where you should create a thread and attach your document to share with the class. It should reflect the research you are investigating so that the entire class can benefit from your information of the topic. If everyone shares what they are learning about their assigned topic in this thread throughout the week, we will all learn from each other. Remember, your topic is assigned in the announcement area.
Review the work from classmates and provide constructive feedback on each topic.
Do you have any personal connection with any of the material that you can share?
In your fourth comment (your first required post will be the comment posted by you as you begin your research) specify one fact or idea that you will bring to your classroom and implement in your planning. This can be something that you researched and will use or by reading your classmates posts and will use in your classroom.

Unit 7 Discussion
Building an Interest Center
A good portion of what is experienced in a quality preschool room happens in interest centers. These are areas set up in your classrooms that have a certain purpose. Examples might be an art area, a science table, library and reading rug, mathematics materials and table, sand and water play area, a place where children can play out and handle roles in a vets office or grocery store. It is in all of these areas that children will get to investigate, experiment and learn STEM concepts.
For this DB assignment you will need to describe an interest center of your choice that will give your children a learning experience regarding 1 of the STEM topics.
Let’s think about this for a moment…
The first thing you need to do is to build out a purpose or goal. For this discussion board example I will suggest a science center with rocks of different sizes, colors and shapes.
We have been studying the 3 different rock classifications, Metamorphic, Sedimentary and Igneous rocks. Materials will include journal pages and colored pencils and markers and four magnifiers in addition to the rocks of those three classifications. Word cards will be placed on the table that includes the 3 types of rocks, smooth, rough, jagged, round etc. to encourage vocabulary development. There will be four chairs at the table. The outcome is hoped that the children will use the magnifying lens to identify similarities and differences in the selected rocks and record them on a journal page using the writing materials and note the classifications.
In the DB entries you will describe the center and its purpose, include materials you will need to have on hand, how you will limit the number of students using the center and how you will assess the centers’ ability to convey what the students will gain from participation.
1st post is the answer post including all points above.
2nd post you need to reply with a sister interest center to a classmates’ interest center. An idea might be having non-fiction books on the library rug to peruse for information on rocks. This correlates to the journal-writing center and will give additional information through pictures, diagrams, and fact related material.
3rd post is the same as post #2
At the end of this discussion board we will have established a plethora of interest centers on numerous subject topics of study.
Select the link above to see pictures of real examples of interest centers in a variety of formats inside and outside.

Unit 1 Assignment
Classroom Observation Report
A preschool teacher will employ 3 different types of lessons as they plan experiences for their curriculum: naturalistic, informal, and structured. You need to read the selection by Lind in the articles and website area of the readings and resources link. She gives very specific definitions of these three important lesson types you will use as you facilitate the learning of your young children. Each has its advantages.
Visit a preschool or kindergarten classroom and observe a Math or Science lesson or lessons in that classroom. After you have read Lind's selection on naturalistic, informal, and structured lessons, write your observations of what you saw or were implied as you watched the experience unfold. Use her guidelines as a resource when you construct your paper of two pages.
The requirements for your classroom observation are:
Observe a prek, kindergarten or primary classroom. Describe the STEM experiences you observe by addressing the following questions
Are they naturalistic, informal or structured learning experiences that are discussed this week? This portion of the answer needs to relate to the understanding of the three types of lessons that occur in the classroom. There are very specific statements that define these types of lessons. You will discover throughout this course that most of what you will do in your early childhood classroom will be naturalistic or informal learning experiences. It is also through these experiences that you will get most of your assessment and evaluation information on your students and your lesson effectiveness.
What did you like about the experiences you observed?
How were STEM concepts integrated into the curriculum you observed? If they were not part of the lessons you observed, how do you think they could have been incorporated into those lessons?
How would you have improved or expanded on these learning experiences?
Are there any questions about what you observed?
Expected Length of the assignment is 2 pages.

Unit 1 Assignment
Final Reflection of Resources
We will study the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and how they relate to preschool planning curriculum through the readings, resources, articles and websites, videos, planning resources and supplemental resources provided in the individual units of this course. These resources replace the textbook and are current materials written by many individual field professionals with life experiences that can give real input into your studies.
Therefore, the first part of the final assignment will ask you to comment on one resource taken from each of the units, your choice. Read all the resources and visit all the links provided in each unit before you make your selection. Some readings will be knowledge you are already familiar with and are solidified by reading. There will be some that will stretch your thinking and give you a new perspective. Certainly, understanding that this coursework is intended to inform, extend your thinking, invite you to query, reflect and refine towards your journey in practice, this assignment will be the final project completed along the way of these eight weeks as you create new knowledge each week.
I would like you to select a resource from the readings and answer these four questions:
What is the name of the resource, article, website or video?
What was the overall idea of the resource and how it related to the whole unit under study? Ex. how it relates to the unit of science.
What was one important idea that you will use in your classroom that clicked for you from this resource?
How has this resource changed your thinking, being specific about where you were in your thinking to what you read and digested that made that aha moment of change?
This assignment should be approximately 2 full pages in length, reflect the entire meaning of the selected resource in a short synopsis form commentary and answer fully the four areas noted in the assignment. It should be submitted using the four bullets and answers underneath each bullet to be consistent in content from the question. These will be collected after each unit, graded, commented upon by the instructor and kept as part of the final assignment. You must complete one each week to be current.

Unit 2 Assignment
Science Activity Plan
This assignment will require you to plan out a Science activity using the attached student sample as a guide.
I have attached several articles that have been retrieved from the NSTA professional journal Science and Young Children. Many times teachers get ideas for their lessons from reading articles, looking at magazines, Pinterest or just searching the web. Knowing that science is at the heart of the questions children ask and subjects they are interested in, this assignment asks you to select an article and answer some insightful questions about how you will use this information from the selection. A well- constructed lesson plan has prescribed elements such as:
Title
Standard
Key Objectives
Materials
Vocabulary
Initiation
Procedures
Closure
Assessments
We also learned in unit 1 that there are three forms of lessons, naturalistic, informal and structured. Although there is a bit of planning in the environment and selection of materials that affect the naturalistic and informal activities in your classroom, this assignment will concern itself with the structured lesson.
Peruse through the selections and make a choice of an article that will inform you as you create a lesson with your chosen topic of study that you selected in unit 1. They are as follows:
Birds in Winter
Science Tickets
Please Touch Museum
The Story of Corn
Leaf it to Nature
A Reason to Write
Exploring the Properties of a Mixture
Shape Exploration: Another Dimension
Inquiry at Play
Light Foundations
For each of the next set of questions, write a paragraph about each explaining how you will use the information.
1. Name of the article from the attachment and your topic of study highlighted in yellow
2. The main idea of the article that you want to use highlighted in yellow
3. Choose a standard that you would use to document the lesson. This will come from either your home state’s Early Learning Standards or the CTELDS found in the NAEYC Library found on the top of the sidebar in this course.
4. A brief explanation of what you want to do in your lesson with a connection to vocabulary words that will be used and some materials you would have on hand. Vocabulary words are very important to focus on and need to be worked properly into the lesson.
Where could you involve the community in their learning?
How will you know if the lesson has met its standards and objectives?
Things to think about:
Where will you get the standards? Look on your State's website to locate the Pre-K standards.
In CT ELDS
Next Generation Science Standards
Hopefully, you are using the standards as a foundation for what you teach so that your students are learning the material they should be learning; that's the science of teaching. Then you take the standards and create objectives for your students; that's the art of teaching. This is how we make a meaningful connection between the standards and objectives. The standards are the goals, which are generally abstract and general statements. Specific objectives are then clustered under these standards. In other words, objectives are statements that describe learner outcomes. Next, be sure that the actual activity that the learner will perform connects to the standards and objectives you already identified.
Students: Be sure to read the Rubric criteria, by which your paper/project will be evaluated before you write, and again after you write.

Unit 4 Assignment
Engineering Activity Plan
This design challenge activity is going to begin in a familiar place for the students. A good preschool classroom is filled with stories that children beg to be read again and again. Teachers understand that reading to children and talking about stories that they have read together build positive relationships and later help when they support their problem solving together. Children take comfort in knowing what the story has in store for them and they build relationships with those characters. It is likely then that they would like to help them solve some of their problems. Stories like The Three Little Pigs come to mind when thinking about a problem that needs to be solved. They need to build a structure that will withstand hurricane winds to keep the piggies safe. Another story might be, Are You My Mother? The bird needs a sturdy nest. By using a familiar story, discussing what the characters might need, you will have an authentic place to begin problem-solving. Use the attached Bug City scenario to help you build your own design challenge. I have attached a challenge we created for, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
Additionally, this activity builds on involving the families in their child's development and learning. As you move through the challenge with the children, you will be modeling for them the steps in the Scientific Method and employing the basics of the engineering process, brainstorming, building, trying and testing, revising and sharing as well as giving the families a connection with preparing their children for later problem-solving successes.

Unit 5 Assignment
Math Domains Activity
You will be assigned to research one of the 5 major Domains. They are Number and Operations, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Algebra, Patterns and Functions, Data collection and Analysis and Measurement. You will be able to work and submit the document for the entire class to view. Your instructor will assign you to a category. You will create 5 strategic teaching practices and reflect upon them in a 3-page paper.
1. Mathematize the world around the children. We offer children the lens from which they can see the math living in their lives every day. You will comment on what meaningful situations would arise for your topic. Where would you see children experiencing this understanding of mathematical understanding?
2. Concrete learning experiences are paramount for young children to understand the connections to math concepts and their everyday materials and actions. Children need to be helped to use these materials for mathematical purposes. Strategize several materials found in early childhood classrooms that you could use in multiple ways to make these connections between concrete experiences, symbols, pictures and language.
3. Recognizing receptive understanding means we know that young children understand more concepts that she can speak. It requires us to figure out what the child actually understands and how we can help the child verbalize their understanding. Giving them more words to explain their mathematical understanding will be the next part of this assignment. What words can we communicate to scaffold their understanding of this topic?
4. Math needs to be multisensory. The more modes we deliver content within the deeper the knowledge expands. Explain the topic with experiences that involve all 5 senses.
5 . We scaffold our young children to construct their own understanding of these mathematical concepts each and every day. Understanding can be captured by standardized measures such as checklists and written papers. They can also be measured by discussion with our young students. Comment upon how you would learn about the children’s understanding of the topic chosen. Knowing what stage the child is in needs to be known and addressed to be able to help them to the next step of understanding.

Unit 6 Assignment
Fiction and Non-Fiction texts
This assignment will have you look at the differences between fiction and non-fiction books you might select for use in your classroom. Fiction books typically have a beginning, middle and end, have plots and characters that develop. Non-fiction books are subject organized, have fact boxes, sidebars, graphs, table of contents, illustrations and captions and an index. Naturally with preschool children their level of reading either genre will be limited but this is where the teacher can be extremely effective in creating a good disposition towards reading material. Some web sites to use when you are researching good titles are:
http://www.nsta.org/publications/ostb/ostb2016.aspx
http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/math/math-tips-for-parents/math-books/
https://shop.nationalgeographic.com/category/books/kids-books
Try also NAEYC, NSTA, TCTM. Each of these professional associations have reference materials dedicated to children's book titles. I will also use Amazon with subject titles for a list and search Pinterest.
For this assignment you will choose a non-fiction book related to your topic of study that you have been working with during this course and the topic you submitted in unit 1.
Name the title, author and genre.
Discuss why you chose this title and where you found it.
Record how you will present the book to the class and what the children will do with this information from your selected title.
an example for this assignment :
In keeping with my rocks theme I will select the book Rocks Hard, Soft, Smooth and Rough by Natalie M. Rosinsky. It is a non-fiction book. I chose this book because it fits my topic, has a table of contents, glossary and index. I searched Amazon for rock children's books and came across this selection which contained points that I wanted to introduce the children namely functions of a non-fiction book. I wanted to introduce why we need a table of contents and as I looked at the book it was organized with the three classifications of rocks, which is part of a lesson I was planning. It had a simple chart which sorted the rocks into groups like color, feels like and uses which had pictures and descriptive words that I would use to build their vocabulary. The book had facts on every page that worked well with the illustrations and large print for easy reading.
I will have this book on the reading rug with several other rock books. I will sit in with the group of children on the rug and inquire about what they see on the pages. I will ask probing questions about what they see on each page. They will respond with ideas from their own background knowledge. I will use this to further their experiences with sorting and classification.

The traditional K-W-L charts addressed the what the student knows, what he/she wants to know and what was learned. There are two resources listed in this unit and a youtube selection. Including an "H" for "How" is a 21st century addition.
How could the "H" be implemented by the teacher and with the students?
Does it add to the robustness of the tool?
How would Vygotsky and Piaget react to your new chart?

This assignment should be approximately 2 full pages in length, reflect the entire meaning of the selected resource in a short synopsis form commentary and answer fully the four areas noted in the assignment. It should be submitted using the four bullets and answers underneath each bullet to be consistent in content from the question. These will be collected after each unit, graded, commented upon by the instructor and kept as part of the final assignment. You must complete one each week to be current.

Unit 8 Assignment
There will be some that will stretch your thinking and give you new perspective. Certainly, understanding that this coursework is intended to inform, extend your thinking, invite you to query, reflect and refine towards your journey in practice, this assignment will be the final project completed along the way of these eight weeks as you create new knowledge each week. .
