Theories of Adolescent Development

For this discussion, select one of the following options.

Option 1: We know that adolescence is a time of growth and development. There are numerous approaches to understanding adolescence, including biological, cognitive, psychoanalytic, and social perspectives. For this discussion, answer the following:

Which perspective—biological, cognitive, psychoanalytic, or social—best describes adolescence?

What are the major differences between adolescents and emerging adults?

What factors are involved that influence an adolescent's development?

Option 2: Think of a moral dilemma from your own adolescence. What did you decide, and why did you decide it that way? How would your moral reasoning on that dilemma be scored according to Kohlberg's system? How would it be classified according to Jensen's three ethics?

Option 3: Locate an article published in the last year about an issue (biological, cognitive, psychoanalytic, or social) adolescents face now, or that you dealt with in your own adolescence.

Summarize the article and share the citation and link.

Describe how you would use this information in your own life regarding your own children or in a professional setting dealing with adolescents?

Development Challenges

For this discussion choose one of the options below.

Option 1: Teens experience roadblocks due in part to the cognitive and physical changes they experience during puberty. Select one major problem that an adolescent can encounter such as teen pregnancy, substance abuse, or anger management issues. Explain why the problem you identified is especially difficult for a teenager to manage based on cognitive and physical changes during adolescence. 

Option 2: How might social media and influencers/celebrity impact how the imaginary audience and the personal fable are reflected in late Millennial, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha's cognitive development? How is this different from how older generations (Baby Boomers, Gen X, early Millennials) would have experienced the same concepts?

Option 3: How would you relate or use this information in your current life with your own children or in a professional setting dealing with adolescents?

Week 3 Discussion

Social Identity Development of Adolescents

Option 1: There are a multitude of influences on adolescent identity development. In modern times, the Internet, social media, and visual images can have a profound effect on both the self-concept and self-esteem of teenagers and young adults. This discussion has two parts:

Use the Internet and other media sources such as television to observe how teens and young adults are portrayed. Describe the images, themes, and messages that are displayed in at least TWO different venues.

Discuss how multimedia (using the images you found) can impact the development of an adolescent's self-esteem using at least one developmental theory to inform your description.

Option 2: The modern American adolescent has the ability to select their gender identity from many options, including male, female, nonbinary, and gender fluid/gender nonconforming. They are able to do the same with sexual identity from straight, gay, bi, pan, even to asexuality. Many of these identities are either not portrayed in media or representation is limited to stereotype or being the only compelling aspect of them. How could this type of representation impact the adolescent struggling with their identity?

Psychosocial Issues and Adolescent Stress Factors

For this discussion, choose one of these options:

Option 1: Multiple factors can contribute to the stress levels of adolescents, including family influences, peer relationships, social media, and substance use. For this discussion, write a brief scenario about a teen and his or her family that revolves around the stress the adolescent is experiencing based on at least one of the aforementioned factors. What are some strategies that parents and caregivers, teachers, and health and mental health professionals can use to support adolescents to manage this challenge?

Option 2: During the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents were essentially trapped at home and isolated from friends and socializing, leading to increased levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. What are some strategies that parents and caregivers, teachers, and health and mental health professionals can use to support adolescents to manage this challenge? More importantly, what are some strategies that adolescents and emerging adults can use to help their own personal growth and development to foster resilience and manage the negative impacts of this event?

Option 3: Given what you have learned about and have experienced during adolescence, what would have helped you to foster resilience or practice "ordinary magic"?

Family Relationships and Sexual Behaviors in Adolescence

For this discussion, choose one of the options below.

Option 1: A variety of parenting styles are incorporated during adolescence. Identify a parenting style that you have either witnessed or experienced and describe how this parenting style can positively or negatively affect an adolescent and their subsequent attachment styles in other relationships.

Option 2: Compare and contrast the sexual scripts of adolescent boys and girls, and explain the reasons for the differences. How might these change given the choice of genders and sexual identities that are now an option for most adolescents?

Option 3: How would you relate or use the information from options 1 and 2 in your current life, either with your own children or in a professional setting dealing with adolescents?
