UNIT 5

Research Paper Draft

Open the Research Paper Template, provided in the Resources. Follow the template's instructions and write your drafted paper directly in the template. Observe the following composition guidelines, which will help you avoid writer's block and have a satisfactory, on-time, drafted paper.

Composition Guidelines

In the prewriting stage, develop an introduction, a body with at least three titled sections, a conclusion, and a reference page. The use of subheading titles will alert your reader about the purpose of the section. Perform research, summarize and paraphrase the ideas, and use in-text citations to give credit to the sources you found during your research.

After the prewriting, begin drafting the sections of your paper. Clearly state what you discovered in your research. Use findings from your research to compose the writing of these sections. These sections will make up the body of your paper.

Continue with the prewriting practiced in Unit 4 until you have enough information to write your draft. After your have organized your information from your sources, compose your paper's paragraphs. Read through each paragraph to be sure the MEAL plan has been applied. Elaborate sentences as appropriate. One strategy is to read a sentence and ask "why" or "how." When explaining "why" or "how" to the reader, your paragraphs will become more substantive. Use additional research if needed and as appropriate to elaborate your research paper topic and problem statement into a strong paper with specific manageable parts.

When finished with the body of your paper, then compose the introduction section. A good introduction includes an overview of the topic, explains the paper's purpose, and informs the reader what the paper details. In addition, consider what you already wrote for the Units 2, 3, and 4 assignments and discussions. A suggestion is to have two or three paragraphs that clearly introduce the topic and give the sections titles that are within the body of your paper.

Include organization structure in your introduction. Refer to the organization structure study and discussion; indicate the functional area or areas to which your topic is related. Connect how your problem might affect the organization and which functional areas of the organization might be affected.

Once the introduction is composed, then you will develop your conclusion section. The conclusion section is typically two to three paragraphs. This is where you restate your topic and give a brief synopsis of what you discovered. Reiterate key points and the functional area or areas that your topic relates and how the problem might affect the organization. Summarize your discovered solutions and implications for your topic. If you still have questions about your topic, include them in your conclusion.

In the template's Appendix A critical thinking six-steps section, compose your reflection about how you used the critical thinking process to develop your drafted paper. Submit your draft no later than Sunday of Unit 5 to ensure that you benefit from the peer review process in Unit 6.
