Process of Science: How Much Time Do Cells Spend in Each Phase of Mitosis?
For this assignment, you will need to
- Go to the “Study Area”
- Select “Chapter 8: The Cellular Basis of Reproduction and Inheritance” at the top of the screen
- Select “Go” to move to Chapter 8
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select, “Process of Science: How Much Time Do Cells Spend in Each Phase of Mitosis?”
Work through the activity and answer the following questions. Submit the Answers within the Homework Module to receive credit.
Review the Cell Cycle (you may use the Cell Cycle Activity, Bioflix, MP3 Tutor or even the textbook for this).
1. According to the lab activity, there are 5 phases that can be visually identified on the slides. Name the 5 phases, and describe each in your own words – what do YOU look for to know that the phase? (This should be different than the definitions that are provided. For example, when I am looking at plant cells undergoing mitosis, I know that a plant cell is in telophase when the new cell was is beginning to form between the 2 sets of chromosomes (purple squiggles) but I can still see that they are in the same big cell. Since you are looking at animal cells, there will be no cell wall formation.) (10 pts)
2. In which phase do you think the cells spend the most time? Formulate a hypothesis regarding this. (5 pts)
3. To calculate the amount of time spent in each phase, you will count the number of cells in each phase and divide by the total to get a percentage. Using the hypothesis in #2, predict which phase will have the highest number. (3 pts)
4. For a species of insect, completion of the cell cycle takes a total of 8 minutes. You are examining cells from this insect under the microscope and see that there are a total of 10 cells, and 2 of the cells are in prophase. To calculate the time spent in prophase for this insect, you will: divide 2 into 10 and multiply that number by 8. (2/10=1/5) 1/5 x8 = 8/5 or 1 and 3/5 or 1.6minutes
If there are 3 cells in metaphase, calculate the time spent in metaphase for this insect. Show your work to receive full credit (3 pts).
5. Complete the Table using the cells on page 3 of the activity (18 pts):
Number of cells | Percent of cells | Time (in Minutes) | |
Interphase | |||
Prophase | |||
Metaphase | |||
Anaphase | |||
Telophase | |||
Total |
6a. Based on the table above (number 5), which phase is the longest? (2 pts)
6b. Do these results support or reject your hypothesis (number 2)? Explain your answer: “The results support my hypothesis because….” or “The results reject my hypothesis because….” (4 pts)
