Graph Practice and Thought Questions

Directions: Study the graph. Using information from the graph and your new-found knowledge of biomolecules, answer the questions below.

Helpful Hint for Celsius Temperature: It can be difficult to think about temperatures in a range you do not use in your daily life. Your body is approximately 37C, Room Temperature is between 20-25C, Refrigerators are 4C, and Freezers are - 20C.

1. At which temperature does enzyme A perform best? Enzyme B?

2. One of these enzymes is found in humans and the other in thermophilic (heat- loving) bacteria. Which enzyme would you predict comes from which organism? Explain.

3. From what you know about enzyme structure, explain why the rate of reaction catalyzed by enzyme A slows down at temperatures above 40C?

4. Would you expect other biomolecules to be affected by changes in temperature? Why or why not? Discuss for lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
