At the same time Europeans were venturing east to the Americas, they were also traveling south to Africa. This resulted in a significant disruption to the indigenous cultures of Africa. The arrival of European Christian missionaries, military groups and traders began a period of exploitation and global trading. Muslim traders also began to spread the Islamic religion and culture in the Sahara region during this time.

  • Thinking about African and European societies between 1000 and 1500 C.E., how do changes occurring in Medieval Europe relate to or affect those occurring in continental Africa during the same period?
  • Consider the people, events, politics, culture, or religious practices. What are a few specific examples of the effects and changes?
