assignment details

This week you will have a chance to think and write about a performance appraisal system that would work best for your position. While some of you may have a system in place that appears to have the characteristics and meet the criteria you will find discussed in the literature on effective performance appraisals, we expect most of you will find things that can and should be improved. It is rare to find performance appraisal systems that are well designed and that also work as intended in practice.
No matter which describes your situation, it is important to use this assignment as an opportunity to demonstrate strong graduate-level critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. You will want to be sure to examine available options systematically and objectively, present evidence-based conclusions, and develop well reasoned and supported arguments. As you work on this assignment be sure to rely upon good scholarly work for insights into best practices in performance management design and implementation. Likewise, use Browne & Keeley's Ask the Right Questions to strengthen your analysis.
If you have questions or concerns about how to handle this assignment, please reach out to seek clarification. As current or future managers evaluating the performance of those you supervise and then giving sound, constructive, and caring feedback will be one of the most important tasks you have. To be frank, despite its importance this is a task that is often not done well and is typically one many approach with trepidation. We hope the knowledge you glean from the readings and from your application of the ideas to a particular system will prepare you to do a good job with this.
Write a paper that presents and defends an optimal performance appraisal system for your current position or for one you hope to hold within the next five years. Using information from articles recommended by your faculty along with research you conduct, briefly explain the purpose you believe the appraisal should fulfill, the approach (focus on goals/results, on behaviors, on traits, or on some combination thereof), the methods, and the process that best fits the position. Explain how your recommended solution will ensure compliance with the five requirements(relevance, sensitivity, reliability, acceptability and practicality) and will help prevent legal difficulties and common rating errors.See the week 4 lecture for a summary ofCascio's five requirements and some of the most common rating errors.
